"Juxtaposes this heartland’s soft golden hour magic with the hard violence necessary to defend it" re @812filmreviews.
@directedbyrt's 40 ACRES — starring Danielle Deadwyler + Michael Greyeyes — now at the Belcourt > https://t.co/ufYM6HJnMG
"Deadwyler’s forceful energy fills the frame; through her rigid stature and her cleareyed speech, she lends power and humor to this lovingly stern mother." 🔥
It's been a minute since I last gave out a Critic's Pick at the Times (over a year, in fact). But man, upon rewatching R.T. Thorne’s post-apocalyptic thriller 40 ACRES, it fully grabbed me.
My review via the Times below:

Here's @directedbyRT@MichaelGreyeyes and Danielle Deadwyler on exploring a history of allyship between Black and Indigenous resistance, and the current moment, in a thrilling dystopian coming-of-age tale.

Danielle Deadwyler is so good (and intense) in R.T. Thorne's 40 ACRES that I was genuinely concerned about the actress's resting heart rate. https://t.co/vSIBvM76N2
This isn’t your typical apocalypse flick — it’s personal.
40 Acres is a taut survival thriller centered on a Black & Indigenous family protecting their land after ecological collapse. Deadwyler’s performance is unforgettable.

A terrifically tense and emotionally acute dystopian thriller, #40Acres also displays the excellent craftsmanship of #RTThorne, a TV veteran making his feature-directing debut. A breakthrough for Canadian Black cinema with a title that references broke American promises.
Critic Christopher Lloyd says #40Acres is a haunting and action-packed post-apocalyptic tale starring Danielle Deadwyler as the stern leader of survivor family struggling to keep her clan together and people-eaters away.

Danielle Deadwyler stars in this politically charged thriller, about Black and Indigenous farmers defending their land in the post-apocalypse. Review here 👉️ https://t.co/P8RA7DWBy9
#40Acres
#40Acres is a very intense and effective post-apocalyptic thriller as well as a surprisingly engaging family drama. Danielle Deadwyler is fantastic as always and Kataem O'Connor is a standout. Definitely the better of the two Deadwyler led genre films this year.
After watching “40 Acres” I firmly believe that Danielle Deadwyler is the best actress working today. It’s criminal that she has never even been nominated for an Oscar!
