Who cut the cheese, trees or soils?! I'll be at my poster from 3-5pm tomorrow where you can find out! #AGU2019 or #AGU19 ?
B13J-2407 - Identifying Sources of Methane from Standing Dead Trees in Coastal Forested Wetlands
1/3 - Determining the source of #CO2, #CH4, or #N2O emitted by trees (from belowground or created in wood?) is a vexing problem - many tracers (even stable isotopes) are biologically active and heterogeneously distributed. We found that #radon#222Rn is a consistent tracer...
3/3 - Hopefully this approach can be used effectively to characterize the patterns of tree vs soil gas contributions in many ecosystems! I'd love to see more about seasonal/diurnal dynamics. A #Rad7 is the only significant expense ($7k?), other methods elements have nominal cost.
2/3 that may disentangle belowground contributions from wood contributions. Night time 222Rn emissions also demonstrated that tree stems emit soil gases continuously, not simply during active transpiration.

@Luke_Jeffrey@NewPhyt@megonigalp I'm excited this is something you were thinking of, too... at least you weren't about to submit a grant proposal you'd spent weeks drafting?
I hope you can use this method in your system, would be very interesting to see how belowground vs internal CH4 partitions in diff forests
Have tree GHG findings you're planning to write up the coming year? Want to submit them to a New Phytologist Special Issue? We're organizing one! "Greenhouse gas emission from tree stems"

2/5 ...environmental controls of gas fluxes. In our upland temperate hardwood forest fluxes exhibited strong dynamics on daily and hourly time frames while seasonal averages varied 2 to 4 fold. Individual stems varied dramatically in CH4 flux... #GHGSymp19
@Luke_Jeffrey I built a Arduino-controlled valve manifold for automation from scratch. Controlled both pnuematics to close chambers and chamber headspace re-circulation to the Los Gatos UGGA. I can share more details on the manifold if you're interested
