I have Pure O OCD + GAD — CBT literally saved my life, both when used in therapy & when I couldn’t afford therapy and relied on self-administered CBT. Obviously not appropriate in every situation, but blanket statements like this are a barrier for folks that might benefit
@average_vibe ...has constant thoughts that are in fact distortions, being able to take a step back is calming and helpful. It’s not enough on its own, but it became an important tool in my toolbox for anxiety. Plz don’t dismiss it entirely for your future patients for whom it might help (2/2)

I was just diagnosed w/ a sucky physical medical problem. It struck me how EASY it felt to disclose, “oh yes, I have this thing, it sucks.” Vs how shameful I feel about “I have these debilitating things in my brain that make me not normal.” Internalized stigma sucks.

People say all the time “I would kill for my child”, but somehow, “I would cross dangerous borders for a better life for my child” is incomprehensible and looked down upon.
@JoanneLeeJacobs I’m THRILLED many students haven’t grown up with the same message. A quarter of the US population is disabled - so many be thankful that our colleges are finally reflecting that reality.
@JoanneLeeJacobs I grew up (and I think many people did until the past 2 decades) with an understanding that being disabled was a label for people who couldn’t leave their house or function “normally,” and they were to be pitied, as opposed to a label that brings legal rights & necessary help
