@DaemonReiji surviving and assimilating are two different things. living solely in linguistic enclaves means you will never be considered fully welcome in their culture. like so: “Members Only じゃないですよ” (not actually)
@BeccaCantspell@_Kyou not necessarily. depends on the filtering abilities of the processing center. when they put the cardboard into the water slurry, some systems can filter out light amounts of oil. so you have to check your local facilities to check
@oubagaku in my experience you have the “im learning japanese” people (duolingo streak of 1000 but still cant read 水曜日) and the “i havent spoken english in 3 months” people (has never stepped foot in japan but reads light novels every day for 8 hours)
very little in-between
knowing english as your first language is a blessing and a curse
it’s a blessing because it’s the trade language of the world, you can go anywhere and get by on english
but it’s a curse since you rarely find yourself in a position that you must use the national language to survive
babies learn languages because it is necessary for survival, so to learn a language later in life, you must activate that same “emergency” mechanism where your brain feels it imperitive to understand whats going on.
if you always have english as a backup, your brain never feels as if you truly need to utilize it. do your best to avoid using english at all costs, if you dont know something, try to ask how to say it using the words you do know. worst case scenario use a dictionary.
reverting to english will destroy all progress you make, as to truly understand a language, you must get to the point where your brain can intuit it without the need for translation.
@rectal_rentals@dtupper Do you speak Japanese? I think you’re painting a wide brush over a small affect of people. Japan has a very large chunk of the user base for this game, and in the communities I have witnessed, clients are actually quite rare.
