A Muslim told me,
“Jesus’ crucifixion never happened, and you cannot find any historical evidence outside Christianity to prove it.”

So I said,
“Okay, I don’t believe Muhammad existed. There is no historical evidence outside Islam that proves his existence.”

He immediately said,
“Hold on! Let me show you non-Islamic sources that prove Muhammad existed. Christian and Byzantine writers mentioned a prophet among the Arabs.”

I asked him,
“Do you actually believe those sources?”

He said,
“💯 Absolutely.”

I said,
“Okay, then let’s apply the same standard to Jesus. There are also historical sources outside Christianity that mention Jesus’ crucifixion.

Tacitus, a Roman historian who was certainly not a Christian, wrote that Jesus was executed under Pontius Pilate.

Josephus, a Jewish historian who was not a Christian either, also wrote about Jesus and his followers and referred to his execution.

So, do you believe these sources?”

He said,
“Errrmm… I don’t believe! Christians made those sources up, the Quran says Jesus wasn’t crucified, so I believe the Quran.”

And that’s where the double standard becomes obvious.

I said,
“By that same logic, I don’t believe Muhammad existed and Muslims made up the non-Islamic sources about Muhammad to convince people he existed.”

He said:
“I have something to stand on. The Quran is my proof that Jesus was not crucified.”

I said,
““I also have something to stand on, the Bible and the four Gospels, which were written long before the Quran by eyewitnesses and those who knew the eyewitnesses. The Bible clearly records that Jesus was crucified and rose again.”

Then came the response: “See, allah made it appear that way. The Bible has been corrupted over time.”

So I said:
“I don’t accept the Quran as a source that overrides the earlier testimony about Jesus, especially when Muhammad did not meet Jesus or His apostles. The Bible is sufficient evidence for my faith that Jesus was crucified and resurrected.

You cannot ask me to accept non-Christian historical sources when they support Muhammad’s existence, while rejecting non-Christian historical sources when they support Jesus’ crucifixion simply because the Quran says otherwise.

You’re applying one standard to Muhammad and another standard to Jesus.

That’s a double standard.”

Stephen Decatur is the most fearless American you were never taught about.

He was born in Maryland in 1779, the son of a naval officer, and went to sea as a teenager. By his mid twenties he was already a household name across the young country.

In 1804 the frigate USS Philadelphia ran aground off Tripoli and was captured, her crew thrown in a dungeon and the ship turned against America. Decatur, just 25, volunteered to take her back. He slipped a small captured ketch renamed the Intrepid into the harbor at night, boarded the Philadelphia under the guns of the fort, set her ablaze so the pirates could never use her, and escaped through cannon fire without losing a single man. Britain's Lord Nelson, the greatest admiral alive, called it "the most bold and daring act of the age."

Months later his younger brother James was killed by a Barbary captain who faked surrender. Decatur rowed straight at that gunboat, boarded it, and fought the man hand to hand on a bloody deck. He was knocked down, and as an enemy raised a scimitar to split his skull, one of his own sailors threw himself into the blade and took the wound meant for Decatur. That sailor, remembered as Reuben James, later had US Navy warships named in his honor.

For that campaign Decatur was promoted to captain at 25, still the youngest man ever to hold that rank in the United States Navy.

In the War of 1812 he ran down and captured the British frigate HMS Macedonian and sailed the prize home to cheering crowds, the only enemy frigate ever brought into an American port as a war trophy.

He was not invincible. In 1815 a British squadron finally cornered his ship, the President, off New York and forced him to surrender after a brutal running fight. But that same year he sailed to North Africa, smashed the Algerian flagship, killed their famed corsair admiral, and forced the Dey of Algiers to end the tribute America had paid for years. At a dinner in his honor he raised a glass and spoke the line that outlived him: "Our country, right or wrong."

He had beaten pirates, cannon fire, and boarding parties across two oceans. What finally killed him was another American. In 1820 a disgraced fellow commodore he had refused to help reinstate met him at the Bladensburg dueling grounds. Both men fired. Decatur fell, mortally wounded, and died that night in the elegant house he had built one block from the White House, a house that still stands today.

Thousands came to his funeral, including the President himself. Dozens of American towns still carry his name.

Anderson returned every gift untouched.

Their letters stayed personal for a time. Writing to "My dear Major," Beauregard promised he would do everything possible to preserve the friendly relations that had existed between them for so many years.

Then the formal demands arrived. Anderson refused.

In the early hours of April 12, around 3:20 a.m., Beauregard’s final couriers, aides James Chesnut Jr. and Stephen D. Lee, delivered the last notice: the batteries would open fire in one hour.

Anderson walked them to their boat, shook their hands, and said that if they never met again in this world, he hoped they would meet in the next.

An hour later, the former student ordered fire on his teacher’s fort and the Civil War began.

Robert E. Lee's mother was Anne Hill Carter Lee, born in 1773 at Shirley Plantation, one of the grandest estates in Virginia. She came from serious money and lineage. The Carters descended from Robert "King" Carter, one of the wealthiest and most powerful men in colonial Virginia. She grew up in the kind of comfort that most people of the era could only imagine.

In 1793, at age 20, she married Henry "Light-Horse Harry" Lee, the war hero and sitting Governor of Virginia. On paper it was a dazzling match. In reality she had married a man who would gamble away everything. Harry's reckless land speculation drained her fortune too, and she watched the family sink from wealth into what people politely called "genteel poverty." When he went to debtors prison in 1809, then got beaten by the mob in Baltimore in 1812, then sailed off to the Caribbean and never returned, Anne was left alone with the children and very little money.

So she raised them essentially as a single mother in reduced circumstances, leaning on relatives for housing and support. She was also chronically ill for much of her adult life, an invalid for long stretches. And this is where young Robert comes in. He was the son who stayed. As a teenager he ran the household, managed the finances, handled the errands and the servants, and personally nursed his sick mother, even taking her out for carriage rides for fresh air and mixing her medicines. There's a well-known line that she said Robert was "both a son and a daughter" to her.

The family had no money to send him to college, which is a big reason he went to West Point. It was free, and it came with a career. His mother's Carter name and connections helped get him the appointment.

She held on just long enough to see him graduate from West Point in 1829, and died that same year, on July 26, 1829, at Ravensworth, a relative's estate. Robert later named his own daughter Anne Carter Lee after her.

The tidy version of the whole family drama: his father was the brilliant, ruined gambler who abandoned them, and his mother was the ruined heiress who held the family together and taught Robert the discipline and duty he became famous for. He spent his life running from his father's example and living up to his mother's.

Grover Cleveland, the 22nd President of the United States, personally hanged two men with his own hands before he ever got to the White House. Earlier in life he was the sheriff of Erie County, New York, and part of that job was carrying out executions. When the moment came, his deputies didn't want to do it, so Cleveland stepped up and pulled the lever himself, dropping the trapdoor and hanging a convicted murderer. He did it a second time too. People literally nicknamed him "the Buffalo Hangman." The future President was a working executioner.

His personal life was just as eyebrow-raising. Cleveland got married in the White House itself, the only President ever to do so, to a woman named Frances Folsom. He was 49. She was 21. And here's the uncomfortable part: he had known her since the day she was born, was a close friend of her father, and after her dad died Cleveland actually helped manage the family's affairs and watched her grow up. Then he married her. She became the youngest First Lady in American history and, weirdly, one of the most beloved.

In his free time Cleveland was a hardcore outdoorsman. Hunting and fishing were nearly as important to him as politics. He roamed the country on hunting trips, spent countless hours fishing, and even wrote an entire book about hunting and fishing.

And that love of fishing set up one of the greatest medical cover-ups in US history. In 1893, while the country was in a financial panic, Cleveland discovered a cancerous tumor in his jaw. Terrified that news of a sick President would crash the economy further, he told everyone he was going on a relaxing fishing trip. Instead, he boarded a friend's yacht, and while it cruised around Long Island Sound, a team of surgeons secretly cut out the tumor, five teeth, and a big chunk of his upper jaw. They fitted him with a rubber prosthesis so he could still talk normally, and the public had no idea any of it happened for years.

So the real Grover Cleveland: personally hanged two men as a sheriff, married a 21-year-old he'd known since her birth inside the White House, wrote a book about hunting and fishing, and had jaw cancer secretly cut out on a yacht while pretending to be on a fishing trip.

That's a President.
