Only one chance in this lifetime…
Like watching sunset at the beach from the most foreign seat in the cosmos, I couldn’t resist a cell phone video of Earthset. You can hear the shutter on the Nikon as @Astro_Christina is hammering away on 3-shot brackets and capturing those exceptional Earthset photos through the 400mm lens. @AstroVicGlover was in window 3 watching with @Astro_Jeremy next to him.
I could barely see the Moon through the docking hatch window but the iPhone was the perfect size to catch the view…this is uncropped, uncut with 8x zoom which is quite comparable to the view of the human eye. Enjoy.
The new Artificial Intelligence Index Report from Stanford Institute’s Human-Centered is out. A fantastic tool for whoever is interested on the topic (everyone should be), with hundreds of graphs and a plethora of data on AI adoption and diffusion.
Let’s start with diffusion. When we compare the diffusion of AI with other General Purpose Technologies (such as steam, electricity, the computer, or the internet), we realize that AI is diffusing a lot faster since the first commercial viable product was introduced. Generative AI’s adoption rate is about 53%, a mere few years after its introduction. The computer took 16 years to reach this adoption rate, and the internet (which diffused fast) about 7 years.
Investment is accelerating, which will likely help boost diffusion throughout our economies (slide 2-3).

Introducing GEN-1.
Our latest milestone in scaling robot learning.
We believe it to be the first general-purpose AI model to master simple physical tasks.
99% success rates, 3x faster speeds, adapts in real time to unexpected scenarios, w/ only 1 hour of robot data.

Prof. Donald Knuth opened his new paper with "Shock! Shock!"
Claude Opus 4.6 had just solved an open problem he'd been working on for weeks — a graph decomposition conjecture from The Art of Computer Programming.
He named the paper "Claude's Cycles."
31 explorations. ~1 hour. Knuth read the output, wrote the formal proof, and closed with: "It seems I'll have to revise my opinions about generative AI one of these days."
The man who wrote the bible of computer science just said that. In a paper named after an AI.

Exactly 25 years ago today, I scored my first — and only — professional goal.
Contrary to what I believed at the time, goalkeepers are not allowed to handle the ball in both penalty areas.
The goal was disallowed and I was sent off — still it earned me legendary status. 😉

Meet the Portuguese language's new grammar detective. This BERT-based model specializes in Part-of-Speech tagging, automatically labeling each word in Portuguese text as nouns, verbs, adjectives, and more. It's a game-changer for NLP in Portuguese!
The OECD just published an important report on the impact of AI on education. This should be mandatory reading for anyone interested in the topic.
According to this report, Gen AI has huge potential to help both teachers and students, improving their creativity, productivity and performance. Gen AI has also the potential to enhance tutoring and teaching quality, support collaborative learning, as well as improve student pass rates.
Thus, AI has truly the potential to dramatically change education and our education systems.
However, there are also several risks that we should be aware.
For instance, in one randomized experience mentioned by the report, access to Gen AI tools improved performance in maths by about 48%, but students performed 17% worse once access was removed (graph below).
In other words, while Gen AI can be a great education tool, it is essential that we develop purpose-built tools for education that make students and teachers active participants and not passive consumers.
As the OECD, rightly emphasizes, “the challenge for policymakers is to ensure that GenAI is a learning partner and not a learning shortcut.”
A must read.
