"There is no man on earth," Lewis wrote, "with whom I should feel equal pleasure in sharing them as with yourself."
Clark replied a month later in two letters: "I will cheerfully join you." The Corps of Discovery operated as a co-captaincy for two and a half years even though the War Department refused Clark the rank.
