Esports, and its organizations, is not yet a profitable endeavor, In fact far from it.
Any given esports scene is comprised of arbitrary unprofitable organizations interacting with a profitable(not esports, entire game) game developer and its esports scene. This is the baseline. Organizations gauge success in a esports titles in different ways; however, it can easily be boiled down into two categories: Financial ROI $ and Fan Base ROI
Esports has and will continue to be a early investment into growing the intangible, perhaps something money cannot directly buy: a fanbase. Over the last few years early esports investors have begun to seek a financial ROI or at least a path to profitability more and more which has increased the pressure on organizations to cut ALL FAT in efforts to make good on a hypothetical profitable future.
So now that we have the defining terms of a bit of what's happening behind the scenes with organizations, lets apply it to apex legends.
Over the years, the fanbase aspect of Apex has completely been lost. What was once core fanbases centered around long standing teams (Hal,Reps,Snipe/Verhulst) (Sweet,Nafen, Rocker/Gild) (Dezign,Gent,Resultuh) (Mande,RPR, Taisheen) has slowly deteriated into people having to support players directly rather than rooting for entire teams. Can you blame them? absolutely not, the wishy washy competitive apex scene and the ever revolving door of its rosters makes it almost impossible to casually follow and consistently root for an organization. So that means one of the main focal points of esports organizations interest in apex legends esports is almost completely lost.
Now that leaves us with the financial ROI interest. Let's be honest, at this point in with Apex Legends esports it is almost bizarre the disconnect between these absolutely electric esports LANs/well run esports scene and the absolute INABILITY to market these things to the hundreds of thousands/millions of players that log on each week casually. At this point I don't even have words as to why there's not a esports tab on the main screen of the game, and why EA hasn't cashed in on the seemingly UNLIMITED amount of TIER 1 esports organizations that have at one point fielded a team and done Skins/Cosmetics/Banners... ANYTHING!!! It should be said that there was a stipend of $100,000 being given to the partnered teams to help cover salaries; however, this is a HORRIBLE business model. It almost admits that this is never going to be a profitable endeavor right from the start. Why not rev share every LAN and incorporate more and more organizations rather than a mostly one off check and nothing else?
Now we arrive to the current state of apex: Organizations are leaving because their main two ROI channels are not being met and there's absolutely no reason to be interested in a title that has this long of breaks between major tournaments.
I personally think that the idea that players were not streaming ranked/scrims more often and that is a determining factor is simply out of touch. The part in which the pro players are at fault is changing rosters legit every LAN and making the scene impossible to follow. Fans of the game have been saying this for years and they are so incredibly right.
So with the current topic being why these orgs are leaving I put a lot of this blame on EA, who at the beginning of the day is the only entity in this equation that has ever turned a profit to begin with. It's on them to want to deep dive and invest (mostly time?) into the esports scene and expect bigger returns later down the line.
It should also be said that the status quo of esports is mostly the same for every game, but the negatives of it are amplified by a weaker esport title.
It should also be said I've been long $EA for years now and they are at ATHs... 🦅
