There's Sitar, then there's Guitar. They will tell you the Sitar came to India from Iran. And the Guitar has no relation to the Sitar. And that 'tar' is not an Indian word. And Indians who had highly sophisticated Veenas and string instruments depicted in stone from 3rd century BCE, and in much older Ramayana and even more ancient Vedas, got a string instrument like Sitar in the 17th century only thanks to the Mughals and Iranians. Absolutely der@nged take. Basant/Vasant is a Sanskrit-Prakrit word, born in India as is the custom of celebrating it. The word comes from one of the 6 ritus (seasons) in Hindu mythology: Basant ritu is spring season, way before the coming of the Turks, Basant was celebrated with ritual baths, wearing yellow, remembering the destruction of the Hindu deity Kama (deity of pleasure and desire) by Shiva (part of the holy Trinity of Puranic Hinduism), Bengalis worship goddess Saraswati (Puranic deity of knowledge) on this day, later was assimilated into the sufi silsilas especially the Chishtis, Bhakti poet Surdas used it to symbolise love for Krishna, "aayi basant, sabhi ban phoole, khetan phooli sarson...."

The sheer audacity to suggest Basant died in the country that gave birth to it and nurtured it in a bazillion ways. I can write an entire book on the many ways in which basant was and still is celebrated in India!

Dehradun : A young student from Tripura passed away after being admitted to a Uttarakhand hospital for several weeks following a violent attack. The deceased, identified as Anjel Chakma, was allegedly brutally stabbed by a group of unidentified assailants when he and his brother protested against racial slurs hurled at them. According to Anjel Chakma’s younger brother Michael Chakma, a group of unidentified miscreants in an inebriated condition began harassing the brothers purely based on their appearance. Racial slurs such as ‘Nepali’, ‘Chinese’, ‘Chinki’, and ‘momos’ were shouted at them. Police have reportedly arrested five persons in connection with the case so far. The arrested individuals have been identified as Avinash Negi, Shaurya Rajput, Suraj Khawas, Ayush Badoni, and Sumit.

Yesterday this beautiful Mahakaal Bhairava murti was found while excavating a pond in Dakshin Dinajpur, West Bengal. It is either from Pala or Sena era, though I would personally place it as Pala, seeing the exquisite work workmanship.

It is rarest of the rare find, as there are no other murtis like this found before; and what makes it even more unique is that it depicts four Bhairavas on four sides, making it a sarvatobhadra murti. I don’t think I have seen anything like this before.

Wish this unique Mahakaal Bhairava murti would be placed in a temple and worshipped, instead of being dumped in a museum storehouse.
