I learned so much from my Dad, but what's been front of mind is this: that if you tell your kids how much you love them and how proud you are of them, then even after your passing, your kids will still feel that love and pride. Thanks for everything, Dad!
Since this is my "professional" account I should mention: My dad was instrumental in the design, standardization, and international deployment of GMDSS: essentially the global equivalent of 911 at sea. Thanks in part to his work, thousands of lives at sea are saved each year.
Well into his 70s, he would say "I still don't know what I want to be when I grow up!" But by his 80s, I think he nailed his ultimate role: an amazing pop-pop to his grandkids.
My Dad unexpectedly passed away last Thursday at the age of 84, peacefully, calmly, in the house I grew up in. He was an inventor, a radio operator, a pilot, an entrepreneur, an amazing father and pop-pop. He never let a loving thought go unsaid. Love you, pop.
Very honored for our work to be nominated for a @IST_org Cyber Policy Award for our "Don't Look Up" work exposing how GEO satellites are broadcasting sensitive data unencrypted. https://t.co/uY2bOZAHSj
Time to un-embargo our @acm_ccs paper. We discovered that GEO satellites have been broadcasting a whole host of different kinds of traffic in the clear, including SMS and unencrypted calls from cellphones, military data, critical infrastructure, and more. https://t.co/7khhhgjBQT
Dear shadow PC members: if you accepted a paper that the TPC rejected, don't feel like you were wrong. You got something out of the paper and chose to fight for it. Keep that fight in you. Amplify the good you find.
Pictured here is Steven Su, a rising senior *undergraduate*, presenting his first-author paper at PETS! The paper presents a clever attack allowing one to track the locations of WiFi access points sold on @eBay, @facebook Marketplace, etc. He's applying to PhD programs this year.
MC2 faculty and students presented four papers
@PET_Symposium tackling critical privacy challengesโfrom smart home repairs to Wi-Fi resale risks. Dave Levin (@DistributedDave) also delivered a keynote on internet censorship. Read more: https://t.co/Sn63OAplgh

Our overarching goal is for you all to make informed decisions as to whether or not to get a PhD. We're just as happy if you leave knowing you *don't* want one, so long as the decision is informed. But we think you'll leave excited about a future career in research!
