I’m still learning.

Probably as much as most people here, and the more I learn, the more I realise I’ve made nearly every rookie mistake in the book.

I’m not a full-time VA. I’m not some hugely successful business. I’ve got a hell of a long way to go.

I started all this as some guy with a speech impediment and a lack of leg function who thought voice acting sounded cool. Since then I’ve picked up an enormous amount of information and advice from some brilliant people.

Some of it useful. Some of it less so.

And I think one of the biggest things I’ve learned is to focus on what works for me.

It’s my journey.

Some people will think I’m doing things wrong. That’s fine. You do you. I’ll do me.

My expectations are realistic. I don’t think someone’s going to magically stumble across my profile tomorrow and make me a star. I know how much I still have to learn and quite frankly, how much time and money I’m going to have to invest in myself to get where I want to be.

But I do want to get there.

Making this dream a reality has kept me going through a lot and whilst I’m working towards it, I want to lift up some of the people around me too.

So if I offer advice, coaching, workshops, feedback or whatever, take my words with a pinch of salt.

Take what’s useful to you. Throw away what isn’t.

Learn from as many people as you possibly can and through as many means as possible. The free stuff available is vast. Find what works for you. I’ll keep doing exactly the same.

hopefully somewhere along the way I’ll have helped a few people, learned a ridiculous amount more and made some good friends.

Since I started I’ve already watched people step away from voice acting after a few months.

And that’s ok.

This is hard. It takes time, it costs money, life changes. People discover it isn’t what they thought it was or may find something else they’d rather be doing.

Personally I have absolutely no intention of backing out.

I’ve come too bloody far for that.

I’ve been spending that time coaching, being coached and working on my craft instead.

Feels more useful to me and hopefully to people who can’t always afford formal training. 💙🧡

Bit of a new one for a guy who literally couldn’t speak for years.

I may have been a touch overzealous with my newly discovered vocality.

Two things I’ve realised watching Miraculous with my kid today:

1. The VA lineup means the bar is high to join that team.
2. I cannot fathom how many times Matt Mercer must have said “LOOK INTO THE LEEEEENS”
