Then I looked at the tables.
At the decorations.
At the guests.
And finally…
at the little boy whose birthday we had all come to celebrate.
My stomach dropped.
Because suddenly, I had a very big question.
“Whose son was he”
There was more making out
and less conversation.
More time together…
and less actually getting to know each other.
Before long, I realised that most of our relationship was happening inside my apartment.
And whenever I asked about his place, there was always a reason.
“I’m tired.”
The man who had been coming to my house.
The man who had been waiting for me after work.
The man who always had an excuse whenever I asked to visit him.
Tammy.
And he was staring directly at me.
Eyeball to eyeball. Neither of us moved. Neither of us spoke.
He looked at me. I looked at him.
And suddenly, one sentence kept screaming inside my head:
“So THIS is the place you were always too busy to bring me to?”
