#Explained | A 2021 NITI Aayog roadmap on ethanol blending has resurfaced amid the debate over E20 petrol, revealing that the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) had recommended retaining E10 petrol alongside E20 for older vehicles.

During stakeholder consultations, SIAM cautioned that phasing out E10 could lead to vehicle compatibility, fuel-efficiency, drivability and safety concerns for existing vehicles not designed for higher ethanol blends. The recommendation has gained fresh attention after the Centre rejected claims that E20 causes widespread engine damage, maintaining that the fuel is safe and has undergone extensive testing.

India has accelerated its ethanol-blending programme to reduce crude oil imports, lower emissions and support domestic biofuel production. While newer vehicles are increasingly being engineered for E20 compatibility, the discussion over how older vehicles perform on higher ethanol blends continues to fuel debate among manufacturers, dealers and consumers.
