“Who is this Rajkumar?” the core truth is that a single disrespectful report against Annavaru was enough to halt Big B’s entire film run in Karnataka.

That’s the viral legend every Kannadiga knows, and it’s rooted in a very real 1982 incident that once again proved Dr. Rajkumar’s unmatched power in Karnataka.

Here’s what actually went down :
Amitabh Bachchan’s Namak Halaal and Dr. Rajkumar’s Haalu Jenu were releasing around the same time. There was a big tussle over the prime Gandhinagar theatre in Bengaluru. Rajkumar fans (who were legendary for their passionate — celebrations like aarti, coin-throwing and dancing) had already secured the hall through their associations. A trade magazine (Trade Guide) then published a nasty report calling Rajkumar “Junior Hitler” / “mini-Hitler” over the theatre issue. Rumours quickly spread that the comment had Amitabh’s backing.

Kannadiga pride erupted.
All Amitabh Bachchan films were immediately stopped across Karnataka theatres. His ongoing shoot of Coolie in the state was in danger of getting disrupted.

Amitabh realised the gravity of the situation and flew down to Bengaluru. He personally met Dr. Rajkumar (the meeting was arranged by senior actor S. Shivaram). He clarified the misunderstanding, apologised, and requested Rajkumar’s help to lift the ban. the fans forgave Amitabh and the ban was lifted after the cordial meeting.

Later, Amitabh even requested Dr. Rajkumar for a special cameo in Coolie (he wanted to carry Rajkumar’s luggage on screen as a mark of respect). Rajkumar politely declined because of his policy against acting in other-language films.

In fact, when Amitabh had his near-fatal accident on the Coolie sets, Dr. Rajkumar went to the temple at Nanjangud and performed urulu seve (rolling on the wet temple floor in prayer) for his recovery — a gesture Amitabh himself has spoken about with deep gratitude.

This is the same Annavaru. One man. One word. Entire Karnataka listened.

Karnataka’s pride doesn’t need permission — it commands respect.
