It is one in which both spouses are in total agreement regarding the terms of the divorce and there are no outstanding contentious issues that might require a ruling by the judge. It is typically obtained more quickly and for a much lower cost than a contested divorce.
Due to financial circumstances, many couples continue to live in the same home after they have separated. In practical terms, if the spouses are sleeping in separate bedrooms for example and preparing and eating meals separately etc., they will be deemed to be living apart.
In Ireland today, divorce is generally accepted as an everyday norm. However, by European standards, divorce in this country is a relatively new concept.
