As the world marks International Yoga Day on June 21, Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar's four-decade mission to make yoga accessible to young people is drawing renewed attention. Through The Art of Living's programmes, yoga has evolved from being seen as a rigid physical discipline to a practical tool for managing stress, improving mental well-being, and building resilience. His approach has reached students, at-risk youth, farmers, and prison inmates across India and abroad.
Yoga Beyond Physical Postures
👉🏽 Gurudev has consistently described yoga as "a way of life" rather than merely stretching exercises. His teachings connect body, breath, mind, and spirit while emphasising happiness and inner balance. The issue is particularly relevant as government data shows suicide is the leading cause of death among Indians aged 15–29, while nearly one in four young people experiences anxiety or depression. Young practitioners such as Devanshi Agarwal from Jabalpur say yoga helped them manage stress and gain mental clarity.
A Global Movement Rooted In India
👉🏽 Gurudev's efforts also contributed to the wider recognition of yoga worldwide. The origins of International Yoga Day can be traced to a 2011 conference at The Art of Living International Center, where leading yoga institutions supported the idea of dedicating a global day to yoga. His programmes have since reached universities, correctional institutions, and vulnerable communities. Maharashtra legislator Shweta Mahale has credited Gurudev's interventions for helping improve morale among distressed farmers in Vidarbha during a period marked by farmer suicides.
The Logical Indian's Perspective
👉🏽 At a time when young people face mounting academic, social, and economic pressures, initiatives that promote emotional resilience and mental well-being deserve thoughtful attention. While no single solution can address every challenge, practices that encourage self-awareness, community, and hope can play a meaningful role in improving lives.
⚡⚡How can schools, families, and communities make well-being practices more accessible to young people today?
