Time is running out for soil.

Every second, an acre of fertile land turns to desert. By 2045, we could face a 40% drop in food production as soil degradation accelerates worldwide.

The numbers are alarming: 63% of India's soil already has less than 0.5% organic matter. The US has lost half its topsoil. In Europe, 74% of soil contains less than 2% organic matter, and two-thirds of Africa's arable land could be lost by 2030.

By advocating for policies that raise soil organic matter on farmlands to a minimum of 3-6% (depending on regional factors) we can turn the situation around.

At @UNCCD #COP16Riyadh today, Anand Ethirajalu, Programme Director at #SaveSoil, highlighted the groundbreaking work of Valluvan Vadavalli Thangavel, a farmer practicing tree-based agriculture with the Save Soil Movement for over a decade. He recently won the #WorldSoilDay2024 Farmer Contest organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.

✨ Valluvan’s commitment to organic farming and his innovative use of country cow excretion, urine, and dung through drip irrigation has drastically improved his #SoilHealth. Organic carbon levels have soared from 0.5% to over 1.5%, leading to:

📈 Improved yields
💪 Healthier soil

His success proves that sustainable farming practices can truly transform the land for the better.
