Imagine walking into a church that's older than England itself.
Escomb Saxon Church was built around AD 675 and remains the oldest complete Saxon church in the UK.
From its Roman stonework to its tiny Anglo-Saxon windows, it's one of Britain's greatest historic treasures.
And the birds sang in the branches,
With a sweet, celestial sound,
And the spirit of the maiden
Was with peace and beauty crowned.
— Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

For a few hours each day, England hides one of its greatest landmarks.
Off the coast of Marazion in Cornwall, the ancient granite causeway to St Michael's Mount is slowly swallowed by the rising tide, turning the mount back into an island.
Yet for almost 1,000 years, people have continued to live, worship and defend this remarkable place.
In 1044, Edward the Confessor gave St Michael's Mount to Benedictine monks, beginning centuries of monastic life on the island.
That chapter ended with the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1539. The priory then became a fortified home and later a Royalist stronghold during the Civil War.
Since 1659, the St Aubyn family has lived on the Mount, making it one of the few English castles to have remained a family home for more than 350 years.
Medieval walls, Tudor defences and modern family homes still stand side by side today.

It’s about noticing the small mercies that keep you alive inside.
