Yesterday, I received Master Michael Offorkaile, an illustrious son of Abia State, who scored an outstanding 367 in the 2026 JAMB/UTME examinations, placing him among the joint 5th highest scorers nationwide.

Accompanied by his parents and the management of his school, Grundtvig International Secondary School, Oba, Anambra State, he visited my office where I congratulated him on this remarkable achievement. As a government built on meritocracy, we celebrate excellence wherever it is found, and his feat is a shining example of what our youths can achieve.

I have directed the Honourable Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Prof (Mrs.) Uche Eme Uche, to work out the details of the State’s support for his academic journey, while my Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Dodoh Okafor, will liaise with the family to ensure smooth coordination.

Michael's recognition is not only to celebrate him but also to inspire other young Abians and Nigerians to strive for excellence, knowing that their hard work will be honoured.

His journey towards higher education has just begun, and we are confident that he will strive for excellence and bring even greater pride to Abia State and Nigeria. As a government, we stand firmly behind him and will provide the necessary support to ensure his success.

One of the biggest failures of our education system is that we have convinced society that intelligence is more important than character.

I have never seen a child sent to prison because he scored F9 in Mathematics or dragged to court for failing English Language.

But I have seen children grow into adults who ended up in prison because of bad behaviour.
Because they lacked discipline.
Because they could not control anger.
Because they had no empathy.
Because greed consumed them.
Because nobody truly developed their character.

Yet, every day, we terrorize children over grades as if exam scores are the final measurement of human success.

A child comes home with low marks and the entire house becomes tense.
Parents panic.
Teachers threaten.
Society mocks.

But when that same child lies, bullies others, cheats, lacks compassion, disrespects people, or shows signs of dangerous behaviour, many people ignore it because “at least he is doing well academically.”

That is the tragedy.
Education was never supposed to be only about IQ.

True education has always stood on three pillars:
Character.
Discipline.
Learning.

And somehow, we abandoned the first two and became obsessed with only the last one.

We are producing brilliant minds with broken values.
People who can solve equations but cannot manage emotions.
People who can build apps but cannot build integrity.
People with degrees but without conscience.
And then we act surprised when corruption destroys a nation.

Corruption is not an academic failure.
It is a character failure.

A country does not collapse because people cannot calculate.

A country collapses when people entrusted with power have no discipline, no empathy, no moral foundation, and no fear of destroying the future of innocent people.

Some of the most dangerous people in society are highly educated.

That should force us to reflect deeply.

Maybe our schools should spend more time teaching emotional intelligence.
Teaching empathy.
Teaching self-control.
Teaching honesty.
Teaching dignity of labor.
Teaching integrity even when nobody is watching.

Because the child who learns discipline may survive failure.
But the child who learns only how to pass exams may someday become successful without values and that is dangerous for any society.

The painful truth is this:
A nation can recover from poor grades.

But recovering from a generation raised without character may take decades.

We must stop raising children only to pass exams.

We must start raising human beings.

You have probably heard me pray to the Almighty God, crƴing to him, saying, Lord, let all my children be greater than I. And people wonder, how can you pray that kind of prayer? That is the way my own future can be guaranteed. I want all my children to be greater than I.

If you are pretending to be a child of God and you are not, you have no future. Believe me honestly, if Christ is not genuinely living in you, you have no future.

This is now by far the biggest academic event in the country.

We are projecting to have up to 100k students in participation for 2027 and we will also remain transparent in every step.

Senior category winner takes N10 million

Teachers in each category takes N3 million

Schools for each winner takes N5 million

Every student that qualifies for round of 45 gets N100k

It was in May 2025, JAMB had released results and candidates from Lagos and South East states performed poorly.

Despite public outcry, a key person in the ministry of education defended the outcome as a reflection of their true capacities under strict examination conditions.

It was during this tense period that @winexviv, founder and CEO of Educare, publicly raised concerns about the UTME results, citing data and reports from schools whose students scored far below expectations despite strong past performance.

He argued there was a technical glitch in JAMB’s system rather than genuine academic failure.
Rather than use kinetic means to resolve perceived injustice, Onyia used subtle diplomacy. He petitioned governors and education officials in the South‑East and Lagos, urging an audit and transparent review before the rescheduled exam concluded.

Consequently, JAMB invited him to join a review panel examining the 2025 UTME process, indicating that his involvement was significant in pushing for scrutiny of how the results were generated.

JAMB eventually acknowledged technical errors in the examination system that affected scores at many centres in Lagos and the South‑East and ordered a resit for affected candidates (about 379,997 candidates) starting mid-May 2025 for affected candidates.

Significant improvements were recorded for many candidates in terms of scores above the 200 benchmark.
I was a direct beneficiary of the non kinetic activism of Alex Onyia. My daughter who had previously scored 179, later scored 299 which gave her straight admission for her chosen course of study.

Can you imagine the level of education apathy this would have generated if it had gone unchallenged?
A 19-year-old candidate, Faith (Timilehin) Opesusi, in Ikorodu, Lagos, reportedly took poison after seeing her 2025 UTME score, which she believed was much lower than expected.
She had scored about 190 and was deeply disappointed because she had done better the previous year.

Very sadly, reports say that a provisional admission notification arrived about 30 minutes after her death.

Alex Onyia went ahead to organize the well publicized and successful South East Maths Olympiad where three students Egejurum Onyedikachi, Onwubiko Chimdiebube and Don-Anele Munachimso emerged as champions. They won cash prizes in millions together with their teachers. Many corporate organizations were partners.

The students have been invited to compete on a global stage at the International STEM Olympiad Grand Finale happening in Rome from July 2nd - 8th.
He is currently organizing a South-East Educators Conference to happen in May in Enugu.
What we need in Nigeria right now are many Alex Onyia who can use non-kinetic means to achieve regional, national and global excellence.
A working, prosperous and egalitarian Nigeria is possible, just a step at a time.
