Tinapa is a powerful reminder that visionary projects require more than massive investment—they need consistent management, sound policies, security, and long-term political commitment.

Tinapa was a $350 million mega resort and business destination, built by former Governor of Cross Rivers State Donald Duke to attract foreign investors, tourists, and businesses from around the world.

It was supposed to prove that Nigeria could compete with the biggest tourism destinations in Africa.

For years, it stood as one of Nigeria’s boldest ambitions.

Then came years of neglect, poor management, policy failures… and during the #EndSARS unrest, parts of the resort were reportedly vandalized and looted, leaving yet another scar on a project that was already struggling.

Walking through Tinapa today feels like walking through a forgotten dream.

Empty buildings.

Silent streets.

Facilities that once promised jobs, investment, and economic growth now sit abandoned.

The question isn’t just, “What happened to Tinapa?”

The bigger question is…

Why do some of Nigeria’s biggest projects end up like this?

We complain that foreign investors don’t trust Nigeria.

But if billion-dollar ideas can be neglected, damaged during periods of unrest, and left without a clear plan for recovery, what message are we sending to the rest of the world?

Tinapa wasn’t just built for Cross River State.l, It was built to showcase Nigeria.

And today, it’s a painful reminder that building something extraordinary is only half the job. Protecting it is the other half.

Do you think Tinapa can still become the tourism giant it was meant to be, or has Nigeria already missed that opportunity forever?

I visited the Dominican church designed by Pa Demas Nwoko in Ibadan this weekend and I was in awe!

The design language & material choice spoke coherently of a type of expression that can only come from a master that loves what he does.

Light was not just a consideration, it was used as an important expression of the design. The openings were strategically located to create an awe-inspiring effect from people who worship or visit.

Natural ventilation is sufficient to keep the place running, without the heat from the sun, thanks to artistically-designed sun breakers.

The staff quarters (see videos in replies) employ the use of louvre windows + shading devices which also have an interesting, distinctive design.

This is what Architecture that responds to its climate and is driven by local context looks like!

I encourage every Architect and architecture enthusiast to visit this place to get inspiration 🤌🏼
