Sedentary behavior is itself a disease, carrying mortality risks comparable to—or even exceeding—those associated with smoking, hypertension, and type 2 diabetes.
Having low fitness raises the risk of mortality by more than 400% compared to having an “elite” level of fitness. Even average and below-average levels of fitness are associated with higher mortality.
For comparison—smoking, diabetes, and coronary artery disease carry a 29–41% greater mortality risk compared to not having these diseases.
Cardiorespiratory fitness is not just “nice to have.”
It’s one of the most powerful predictors of longevity—stronger than many traditional risk factors.
And it’s modifiable. The message is clear - get moving.

We are secrets to each other
Each one's life a novel
No-one else has read
Even joined in bonds of love
We're linked to one another
By such slender threads #RIPNeil#RushFamily
For those of us who love RUSH we have a special place for Neil. He was an amazing drummer and wrote the lyrics (which are AMAZING). When musicians die that have a special place in your life, heart, soul; it's those names... https://t.co/Aoxy6DAloC
