@PopMusicNick Funny enough, the music industry currently treats streaming services as the advert for the live performance, and is the primary way artists make money. That goes to show the value difference we put onto the live performance vs the studio
@Brandon84872063 This is true. One is the perfect version and the other is about being there in the moment. Even if the song doesn't sound the same in person, it's hard to care when the band you love is right in front of you.
#POPMUSF21 I agree that music today is much more about the studio versions than the live versions. Since the '60s, albums have stopped being "substitutes" and turned into art pieces. Now, instead of just having the blueprint of the song, you have a "perfect version" of the song.
@wjneville31 yes, it's true that the music itself still has value, but it is also important to recognize cultural theft. At the same time, it is also unfair to restrict an artist's creativity. It truly comes down to the intention of the artist.
@Svillamar461 I would say less so conservative values and more so more understandable and familiar musical conventions. Music made to be this way usually has a financial incentive in mind as it's less about the creative artistry of the piece.
#POPMUSF21 the culture surrounding music is just as important as the sound. White artists stealing musical styles from black musicians is seen as "schlock" as it seems disingenuous as the music has been removed from its cultural context.
@biodomer Yes, the breaking has that aspect to it where you really feel that he's going to his limit. In a smoother falsetto, you don't exactly get that as you can't grasp how high they really can go. With breaking, you feel that strain in much stronger and raw way.
@sarahpow2020 Yeah, it's definitely a style that was purposefully chosen to express raw, powerful emotion. The crooners also expressed emotion, but something much more romantic and timid. Ray Charles was much more expressive and energetic in this regard #POPMUSF21
#POPMUSF21 Ray Charles uses the breaking voice technique for emotional emphasis. The effect is similar to that of a shrieking guitar, as it's loud, raw, gets your attention, but also holds on to that note, like any other singer would, in a way that's just as satisfying.
@CreggSiobhan I agree, I think when music is created to copy the success of other's innovations, they can potentially make a big hit, but will never be able to recreate the original's cultural value. We've heard that sound before, and thus it gets lost in the shuffle.
@lankyzach Yes, it's easier than ever to find new types of music, and thus more people are open-minded and willing to listen to it. Back when it was mostly radio, it made more sense to repeat the same kind of music and not risk a poor reaction from playing something a lot weirder.
@Svillamar461 True, earphones can be seen in the same way as other aesthetic accessories, which is reflected in how many try to look visually appealing while you wear them. The type of headphones/earphones someone wears may change how you look at them.
@hynes_reilly#POPMUSF21 This is an interesting criticism. I don't think it's a fair thing to say radio encourages you to experiment since radio is heavily encouraged to simply play the biggest songs at the moment. Even classic rock stations and other genre stations mainly play the classics.
#POPMUSF21 Spotify has changed the way I listen to music in how I'm now more open to new genres and share what I like more. I'm willing to seek out new types of music and share my favorites with friends because of how accessible any song is with a streaming service.
(2/2) Every aspect of music: tempo, structure, chord progression, etc. has a widely accepted generic version. Structure, for example, always includes a chorus. When we test to see if we like a song, we focus on it. If one doesn't exist, we are suddenly lost.
#POPMUSF21 (1/2) Popular music is inherently limited because of the effort the majority of people want to put into listening to it. People more easily understand what's already familiar instead of trying to learn to understand something different.
