Bill Yeoman Jr. tells @PaperCityMag that many still don't grasp what University of Houston great Warren McVea endured to break the color barrier in much of the South as the first Black player to get a football scholarship in Texas. "Most people don't understand that he got lots of death threats that were extremely serious when we started playing the teams that we played every year," the son of legendary UH coach Bill Yeoman says. "And that included Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Florida, Georgia, Alabama and Tennessee. Memphis was really probably the most cruel.

"There were many times Dad told him he didn't have to play the first couple of years if he didn't want to. That's how serious the death threats were. And Warren just said, 'Let's go play.' "

McVea passed away this weekend at age 79. And Yeoman Jr. wants people to remember his friend's courage and his heart. More to come.
