🗣️ Toni Kroos: “There’s no better way to define this than Madrid being robbed by a decision that completely changed the derby.

“Look at the incident again. Giuliano Simeone clearly tries to draw the contact. Huijsen gets his arms out, which you see every weekend in football when players are trying to protect themselves and get away from each other.

“Dean is trying to get out of the situation. They’re inside the box, Simeone goes down and suddenly it becomes a red card.

“A red card?

“That is total shambles.

“What makes it even harder to understand is the inconsistency. Lee Kang-in makes a tackle on Arda Güler that could have seriously injured him and doesn’t even get a yellow card.

“Then Madrid are punished with a red for a situation where the contact is nowhere near as serious.

“How can players understand the rules when the threshold changes from one incident to another?

“Huijsen is trying to get away. Simeone is looking for the contact. The referee sees it and gives a red.

“That’s not protecting football. That’s deciding a derby.

“And once you give that red card, you completely change the game. Madrid are forced to play with ten men, Atlético get the advantage and everyone forgets what actually happened before the decision.

“For me, that’s the most frustrating part.

“We can talk about whether Huijsen should have been more careful, of course. But a red card has to be a clear sending-off offence.

“This wasn’t.

“Madrid didn’t lose control of the derby because of football.

“They lost a player because of a decision that should never have reached that punishment.

“That is not a refereeing mistake you simply move on from.

“That is a decision that changes the entire match.”
