Cast ur minds back just 3 years. Iraola had taken over Bournemouth. His first 10 games went like this:

🟥 Liverpool knew they had a midfield problem when they chased Tchouameni, Caicedo and Zubimendi. They’ve known for a while. Yesterday at Newcastle simply underlined that it still hasn’t been solved.

If Richard Hughes is serious about fixing it before the window shuts, these are three names I’d be looking at:

🇸🇳 Lamine Camara
🇪🇸 Chema Andres
🇪🇸 Mikel Jauregizar

All three bring the legs, aggression, defensive awareness and ball-winning ability this Liverpool midfield is crying out for.

I’ve broken down why each one could fit Andoni Iraola’s double pivot, and why this is a problem Liverpool can no longer afford to leave unresolved.

I was watching back a few bits from older games for a post to compare the current state of the midfield with the older one, but instead I am just posting this.

Watch Fabinho and Gini in this clip.

Look at Fabinho and Gini:

- They stay close to each other

- Fabinho covers for Matip (defensive awareness)

- Fabinho anticipates where the ball is going to stop the attack (and isn't scared to challenge)

- Then he anticipates the header and heads it to Gini (Both close to each other to maintain options)

- Gini gets the ball, moves it quickly to Fabinho.

- Fabinho turns quickly and passes forwards

Both stopped 2 potential breaks, and started a new attack for us.

Being a midfielder is about being smart. Not running around.

Compare that to yesterday. Night and day.

I've not seen anyone say we need a "specialist holding midfielder" like Fabinho.

We need players who can actually play in a midfield 2. Lads who can do a bit of everything, lads with intelligence.

Dom and Grav are on a combined ~£600k per week, basically making them undroppable, but neither are suited to a double pivot, the favoured system of Iraola. Richard Hughes really would have some explaining to do if he was sticking around.
