The bigger story is that China approaches the point where it adds more storage capacity each year than coal capacity, while simultaneously adding 7–10× more wind & solar than coal.

At that point, coal increasingly starts to look less like the growth engine of the electricity system & more like a strategic reserve asset with a limited lifecycle.

My own expectation for 2026 is roughly:

☀️ Solar: 350–450 GW
💨 Wind: 120–150 GW
🔋 Storage: 90–120 GW
⚫ Coal: 50–70 GW

If those numbers are even approximately right, then the figures we're discussing today will look surprisingly conservative by the end of 2026.
