Whoever came up with the phrase cheap is expensive certainly never fueled at Astrol Petrol Station.

1. It is 100% Kenyan, founded in 2000 by the late Thayu Kamal Kabugi and is now run by the son, James Mwangi.
2. They not only own the land their stations are built on to cut costs but also manage their stations directly rather than franchising.
3. Their fuel contains a high 91 PON rating, which is higher than the premium fuels around, including V-Power.
4. They are not only 2 - 7 shillings cheaper but also never hoard fuel whenever there are shortages.

I think we might be part of the reason my father never got wealthy. We used to pray away his blessings. But in our defense, his blessings meant suffering for us.

He once bought a pickup for the transport business. Lakini sasa, shida ilikuwa every day at 6am we had to push it — it had a hard start. Sometimes it would run out of fuel and at the crack of dawn we’d go get fuel a km away with a jerrican in the freezing cold. Even though business seemed to be doing good, the bottom-up economics never got to us. My father seemed to be the only one benefiting — new clothes and kept adding weight. The rest of us were just mere government bloggers typing _tutam_ from a bedsitter in Mwihoko.

We prayed for God to remove it from our home. And it worked. One night it stalled in a place the devil goes on holiday called Nderi. After failing at basic mechanics, he left it there to work on it the next day. The next day he got there with a mechanic only to find an empty shell like ODM. These people had stolen even the rust off the roof and the cockroaches from the seats. Everything was gone. They even took the number plates.

He sold it as scrap for an undisclosed amount. We had to pretend to be sad for a whole month — which was the only month we had a full night's sleep in a year.

Oburu might be praying for ODM to die so he can rest too. He looks tired 😩😩

I remember reading ‘Down and Out in Paris and London’ by George Orwell. And there’s a time when working in Paris he and his roommate were so broke that they essentially lived on red wine and bread. The pro tip was, if you took a piece of raw garlic and rubbed it all over the bread, it made you feel full longer because you could taste the garlic on your breath.

Have never forgotten this for some reason. Maybe I think the diet would fit well with me. I could live on bread, prosciutto, hard cheese, and red wine.

I was in court this morning when a case was mentioned that stopped me mid-conversation with a colleague.

The defendant had reported himself.

Not through a lawyer. Not after a plea bargain negotiation. He just walked into the station three months ago, asked for the IPO, and confessed to obtaining money by false pretense from someone he had defrauded four years ago.

The victim hadn't reported it. As far as the police were concerned, no crime had been committed. There was no file, no complainant, nothing.

He created his own case.

When the prosecutor was narrating the background to the judge, even she seemed slightly thrown off. She kept her composure but you could tell this was not something she had encountered before.

The judge asked him directly, "You came to the police yourself?"

He said yes.

"Why?"

He said he had turned a new leaf and could not continue knowing what he had done to that man was sitting unresolved. He said he had already gone back to the victim privately and made arrangements to refund everything, but he felt that wasn't enough. That the law also deserved to know.

The victim himself was in court. He had written a letter asking for leniency. He said the money had been refunded in full and he had forgiven him completely.

The judge adjourned for ruling.

I don't know if things have changed

But every time I told my dad (a retired cardiologist) about doing preventive MRIs and body scans etc

He said "yes Piet with any scan, you will find lots of stuff that looks malign (bad) but is mostly benign (good), but you're unsure so you start cutting in the body, doing invasive stuff, doing treatment and that's how you actually make someone sick who was fine before"

An example would be prostate cancer which apparently most men have latent cancer cells of anyway after age 50 and it's slowly growing but doesn't mean it will kill them

I'd love to hear counters to this though as I want to be a believer in preventative medicine, and do blood work and checkups regularly too

There was drama in court as a former German Navy officer accused a young man of stealing two phones, a gold ring worth KSh 750,000, and withdrawing KSh 63,000 from his M-Pesa.
