I’ve seen so many comments saying 50°C isn’t that bad and is perfectly survivable. Well, it's deadly.
Two very fit men in their 30s died hiking in temperatures of up to 50°C (122°F) near Dubai in July. One was an amateur footballer.
The inquest heard they suffered cardiac and respiratory arrest, severe rising body temperature, organ failure and heat stress from the extreme heat.
At temperatures like this, the body struggles to cool itself, and things can turn lethal very quickly, even if you’re young and fit.
Climate change is making these unlivable extremes way more common, and we need to stop underestimating how deadly this heat actually is.
Today, we're kicking off the first phase of the research preview for Model Hardware Standard (MHS): a new standard for AI agents to safely operate physical equipment in scientific research and advanced manufacturing.

Starting today, 10,000 scientists across every field, from math to chemistry to physics and more, can get Claude through our new Claude Team plan for scientists. Standard seats are free, and premium seats with 5x usage limits are $15 per month, an 80% discount, for one year.
Claude is becoming increasingly capable of scientific work, with recent progress on problems from advanced physics calculations to protein design. Alongside that progress, we've been investing in the research community: Claude Science launched in June, and our AI for Science program funds high-impact projects with free credits. Today's expansion builds on both.
Principal investigators (or equivalent) at academic and nonprofit research institutions can sign up, then add the researchers in their group. Over the coming months, we plan to extend the program well beyond the initial 10,000 seats.

Yes it sucks to spend $200 on a bad antibody. That undoubtedly adds to the cost of doing research. But the total costs of this fraud are *MUCH* larger.
Most people recognize the enormous *time* cost of this fraud - every basic scientist has wasted days trying to make bad antibodies work. But what productive use could that time have been used for? What discoveries *weren’t* made because of this? (Opportunity cost)
It’s even harder to measure the cost of false positives. How many drug candidates made it to phase 1 testing because of bad antibodies? Is this why so many drugs fail in phase 1?
How many patients were harmed by ineffective therapies developed using bad antibodies? (Human cost)
How many hundreds of billions do failed phase 1 studies add to the cost of drug development, and indirectly to overall healthcare costs?
We’re all paying for this fraud whether you’ve ever pipetted or not. The companies that are deliberately selling bad antibodies should be held accountable for these costs.
Remember that many people undoubtedly tried these antibodies, noticed they didn’t work, and didn’t say anything about it because reagents failing to do the thing they’re supposed to do is unfortunately extremely common in biology
315 kb Chromosomal Inversions with Zero DSBs! 🌾⚡ Caixia Gao’s Team at CAS Engineers RNA-Guided Bridge Recombinase ISCro4 in Trends in Biotechnology!
Published in Trends in Biotech (August 20, 2026): Co-optimization of bridge RNA & protein structure yields up to a 30-fold efficiency surge for large-scale genome rewiring! 🎯🧬
Key Engineering Highlights:
🧬 Dual-Loop RNA Precision: Tailored bRNA loops (TBL/DBL) and 3′ tevopreQ1 motifs alongside the AiCE-evolved Rm7 mutant (D164E+E220A) to drive a 29.8x efficiency increase.
📦 Single-AAV Packaging: Ultra-compact enzyme (<350 aa) packs alongside bRNA into a single AAV, executing 31 kb inversions in human HEK293T cells.
🌾 315 kb Crop Inversion: Executed a 315 kb chromosomal inversion in rice (OsHIS1 promoter swap) with 7.5% efficiency and zero off-target structural variants (100x WGS confirmed)!
🌱 Trait Bioengineering: Raised OsHIS1 expression 15.1-fold to confer mesotrione herbicide resistance without modifying protein-coding sequences.
