منذ بداية ون بيس في عام ١٩٩٧، كان أودا يخطط لإنهاء القصة خلال خمس سنوات فقط، حيث كانت مواجهة اليونكو هي النهاية المتوقعة.
لكن بعد النجاح الضخم وانتشار العمل عالميًا، تغيرت الأمور تماما.

في عام ٢٠٠٤ اعترف أودا أن القصة خرجت عن نطاق خطته الأصلية بكثير. حتى أنه في حديث مع زوجته، توقّع أن العمل قد يحتاج حوالي عشر سنوات إضافية لينتهي.

بحلول ٢٠٠٩، بدأ أودا يمزح في المقابلات قائلاً أن القصة قد لا تنتهي أبدا بسبب استمراره في إدخال شخصيات وأحداث جديدة بشكل مستمر.

في ٢٠١٢ صرّح أن المانجا وصلت إلى 60% مما أعطى المعجبين أملًا بأن النهاية أصبحت قريبة.
لكن في 2016، صدم الجميع عندما قال أن القصة وصلت فقط إلى 65%، أي أن التقدم خلال أربع سنوات كان بسيطًا جدا.

ثم في ٢٠١٩ ذكر أن النهاية ستكون خلال أربعة إلى خمسة سنوات، وعاد في ٢٠٢٢ ليؤكد أنه يأمل إنهاء العمل خلال ثلاث سنوات.

وفي ٢٠٢٥ انتشرت إشاعات بأن النهاية ستكون في أكتوبر ٢٠٢٦.

لكن الحقيقة الآن أن حتى أودا نفسه لا يملك موعدًا دقيقًا لنهاية قصته
