I worry about the sociological defeatism baked into much therapeutic sermonising: 'you can only change yourself'. This is a frankly demoralising message to send to young people. It also evades our rich tradition of research on the therapeutic power of organising & social action.
« Dénoncer n’est pas une faute mais un devoir » « Nous appelons à une culture institutionnelle qui ne tolère pas les représailles, mais qui est engagée envers la justice sociale et contre la violence institutionnelle. » https://t.co/bgA8fZqqPu
If a person wants to identify as having a mental disorder, disease or pathology, that’s fine. What’s not fine are professionals labelling sufferers this way with righteous & un-self-critical impunity, pressuring sufferers to defer. This isn’t treatment it’s ideological capture.
"We propose that it is therapeutically important to problematize, pathologize and address the systems and narratives that discriminate and cause people to need to cope, instead of focusing therapeutic interventions only on the internal resources of the person doing the coping."
"People with marginalized identities are often expected to find ways to cope with oppression and then sent back into a broken world, perhaps with stronger coping skills, but often ones which do not address the root cause or source of the pain, which is social injustice."
"Our primitive ancestors had to discriminate against those they perceived as different from their clan to enhance their survival. It was adaptive back then; it is maladaptive today."
"Homophobia, along with other forms of discrimination against differences, must be investigated and highlighted as psychopathological." https://t.co/S9gB1846sP
"Science has afforded much less attention to vestigial psychosocial or behavioral traits (emerging from neural remnants of our ancient past). (...) Homophobia deserves to be viewed through a macroscopic lens as a maladaptive vestigial trait in contemporary society."
