Reality check on flight attendant "unpaid" boarding time.

Is it reasonable to think that generations of North American flight attendants, represented by prominent labor unions, simply agreed to work for "free"?

The truth is a little more complicated.

FA pay evolved through negotiations over decades.

Historically, the model emphasized higher hourly rates for block time (after the doors closed) rather than separate boarding pay.

A senior FA on a long-haul international trip might board only once during an 8- to 12-hour (or longer) duty day; maximizing the rate on those hours made sense to both management and FAs.

Junior FAs on short-haul turns often board 4–6+ flights a day on 60- to 120-minute legs, so a much larger share of their workday fell outside full-rate pay.
That structure worked better when seniority lists and progression were stable. Growth and heavy hiring shifted the workforce younger with more short-haul heavy flying, changing the incentives and the make up.

Contracts were never designed unilaterally by management. Unions negotiated them and members ratified them for decades, complete with duty and trip rigs that credit some ground time.

Recent contracts (Delta first in 2022, followed by American, Alaska, and United in the U.S., then Air Canada in Canada) have added boarding pay, usually at percentage of the full hourly rate.

Both sides adapted.

First and foremost, flight attendants are safety professionals. Airlines simply cannot operate without them.
In recent years their unions have been highly effective at highlighting the issue and winning public and political support. They’ve created a powerful sound bite -- "unpaid work" -- that has resonated with politicians and the public who were less familiar with how flight attendant pay programs evolved.

Understanding the history -- jointly negotiated trade-offs that now need updating -- helps explain both how we got here and where contracts are likely headed.

It wasn’t an evil management plot to make people work for free. It was a compensation system designed long ago through free and fair collective bargaining.
Decades-long careers and continued interest in the job reflect the broad support the traditional compensation plans once generated. There’s little doubt the updates will meet the evolving expectations of the people airlines and their customers rely on for comfort and, most importantly, safety on every flight.

Premiers fighting over a pipeline makes for a good media soap opera.

It doesn’t matter. Courts have ruled that under section 92.10(a) of the Constitution, the federal government has sole power to approve or reject the pipeline.

ONLY MARK CARNEY stands in the way.
