We don’t have a voter registration problem in Louisiana — we have a voter turnout problem.

Part of that is because too few people are consistently engaging our communities, organizing, and educating people.

That’s why I’m working to bring Civics for the People to Shreveport and New Orleans next month. Knowledge and turnout go hand in hand. We need both if we’re serious about changing our outcomes.

In 1965, an Alabama State Trooper shot and killed Jimmie Lee Jackson during a protest in Marion, AL. He was unarmed and the protesters were peaceful. His death led to the Selma to Montgomery march for voting rights and ultimately the passage of the 1965 Voting Rights Act. 61 years later Alabama continues to be ground zero for voting rights in America. Last week, I had the honor of being with Jimmie Lee’s sister Emma to thank her and her family for their sacrifice.

My father’s work for justice did not grow apart from faith. It grew out of it.

When Faith Calls points to the spiritual grounding that shaped Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s ministry, his commitment to nonviolence, and his courage in the face of opposition.

At a time when so much is distorted, I believe this docuseries can help people better understand the faith that informed his witness and the responsibility we still have to live out justice with conviction, love, and moral clarity.

When faith calls, courage is the answer.

Today, we remember Alton Sterling on the 10th anniversary of his death. 🕊️

While selling CDs outside a convenience store, he was fatally shot by police.

His death sparked national outrage and remains a painful reminder of how little Black life is valued in this country.

Cariol Horne stopped a fellow cop from choking a handcuffed Black man in 2006. Buffalo PD fired her for it in 2008 just one year before her pension.
She fought for 14 years. In 2021, a judge restored her pension and Buffalo passed “Cariol’s Law,” requiring officers to intervene against excessive force.
Real hero who paid the price but never gave up. Legend. 👏🏾

If you think someone dancing with you at an event means they aren’t racist—or won’t vote against your interests—you need a deeper understanding of how power works.

I’ve seen a lot of conversations about race relations in Louisiana that are rooted in feelings instead of voting records. If someone dances with you on Saturday, then votes to cut funding for your schools on Monday, they’re not your ally.

We should never confuse social interactions with political solidarity. If your vote helps elect people who weaken Black representation or reduce funding for Black communities and projects, you’re supporting financial discrimination—whether you intend to or not.

If people are going to take your tax dollars, you should have a say in who spends them and how they’re spent.

North Las Vegas Black deaf mom Andrea “Dre” Hollingsworth was violently yanked from her car and slammed to the ground by a cop in front of her twin daughters all because she “wasn’t listening” even after she tried signing and showing she was deaf.
After a 4+ year fight, she won a $1.2 million settlement.
