VIDEO | "I want to send a message that though we celebrate these days every year, but the ground reality is that they are not treated well in the country. I want to say to everyone that we should talk about it. We should ensure inclusivity. They should get their fundamental rights. I have a 3-year-old son, who is suffering from Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, in which 40-60 pc children have autism spectrum, epilepsy, and other cross disabilities, unfortunately my son has ASD, epilepsy. When he was small, there were developmental delays. We had taken him to a school for admission, he was not given admission, I did not get any written response. There are other schools which accommodate. When we had to put him in Nursery class, we understood that his cognitive skills were not matching that of other children, we then thought to admit him a year late. Special schools should be compassionate. One cannot deny admission. It's a shocking thing. They say they don't have the facilities, but they have to have it as it is a government directive. He should go to schools. I am facing this and I am wondering what other people would have been going through. I have complained at Child Dept. They asked me to file an FIR. I want to say that when they are specialised, then why it is happening, schools should take responsibility," says Madhuri Patle, Mrs Universe India 2023, on International Disability Day, who is also struggling to get her son admitted to school because he is suffering from Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.
