Staff at GMLC attended the @LawCentres conference this week in Leicester. LCN conferences are a place where Law Centres across England and Wales can learn from one another and discuss our strategic priorities. This year's theme was 'Securing Tomorrow's Frontline Justice'.
Thank you to Momen Alnsour, a GMLC volunteer who has been helping clients on Reception this year, triaging enquiries and signposting to other services where appropriate.
The Law Centre couldn't operate without the dedication of volunteers like Momen.

"Landlords issue surge of no-fault evictions ahead of legal ban."
If you receive a s21 Notice before 1/05/26, or your landlord issues a claim against you, get legal advice!
Many no-fault evictions can be defended - you might not need to leave your home.

Freezing housing benefit makes it harder for renters to pay their rent.
However, endlessly increasing the amount of benefits paid direct to landlords is not a long-term solution.
We need #RentControls in the private sector. It could save the government billions.
It's good to have some positive news to share!
"Union says new entitlements, part of Employment Rights Act 2025, will help lower-income households."

Today the two-child limit is gone. Parents have told us what this means for their kids:
A first-ever birthday party for a 10-year-old
Better quality food
Clothes that aren't completely worn out
Going on the school trip without getting into debt
A new mattress
Swimming lessons
'Union busting' has been in the news, with tech companies accused of unfairly dismissing employees for their trade union activity. GMLC campaign volunteer Deborah Okyere asks: what does this mean, and what are our legal protections from union busting?

Britain's economy has become reliant on migrant workers to fill vital roles in care, health, cleaning and other low-paid work. Now the government wants to punish those workers for their own low wages?
This would create a two-tier labour market that drives down conditions at work.
Any policy of penalising migrants for relying on benefits would be a disaster for child poverty and homelessness.
While the government refuses to do anything about rents and the cost of living, people rely on benefits to pay their essential costs.

The real-terms freeze in Legal Aid rates for decades has led to many professionals in the sector quitting - or being dramatically underpaid for their skillset compared to their privately-funded opponents.
Access to justice needs equality of arms.
