@bethmaryhall @brithume Yes, this is a great start. I hope it doesn't turn into a dud - after all, it will be run by the gov't. When something has no competition, it can falter easily, but it's a great concept and a great start.
@SharonLLaughli1@stegwort23 @zendog13 @idiot_jo@brithume I think I can shed some light and finish this off. I agree with stegwort's last message. Yes, it's not all inclusive for every instance, but generally if you have white skin, you don't have to deal with certain "racial" issues (i.e. pulled over in a "white" neighborhood, etc).
@CuriousYa@MoHenry58431574@SharonLLaughli1@brithume I don't want to risk exhausting a subject, but I tend to think that racist people, racist remarks, and racism, are different than systemic racism. All are abhorrent. Systemic racism to me is policies that are targeted towards race.
@CuriousYa@stegwort23 @zendog13 @idiot_jo@SharonLLaughli1@brithume Agreed. I'm just giving an off-the-cuff suggestion for what I consider the real problem in poor communities - education and the nuclear family. (and according to the Annie E. Casey Foundation (just a Google site I came across), 64% of black kids are in single-parent families).
@CuriousYa@MoHenry58431574@SharonLLaughli1@brithume Totally agreed. My overall premise that is being grossly taken out of context or simply totally misunderstood by many on this thread is that BECAUSE of those past, abhorrent issues (systemic racism), we have the fallout today. But does that systemic racism still exist?
@zendog13 @SharonLLaughli1@stegwort23@idiot_jo@brithume Who's denying that white supremacy didn't happen and isn't in our society today? The issue is that the narrative is ALL white people are privileged BECAUSE they are white, no matter their economic circumstances.
@zendog13 @CuriousYa@stegwort23@idiot_jo@SharonLLaughli1@brithume So promoting structure so kids can get out of the projects, get out of poverty, is social engineering. Otherwise let's just give up and not figure out how to help the cycle of generational poverty so kids never get a chance.
@CuriousYa@stegwort23 @zendog13 @idiot_jo@SharonLLaughli1@brithume Exactly my point. We need to figure out how to create a situation to allow that structure to happen. Create a situation where one of the parents can stay home. Create a situation/incentive where the father doesn't take off. It should be of highest priority in our society.
@CuriousYa@stegwort23 @zendog13 @idiot_jo@SharonLLaughli1@brithume Yes, but I think funding is only half of it. I think addressing the issue of the nuclear family is the other half. Kids need to have discipline and structure at home. Be home for dinner, do their homework, go to bed by 10pm, and have breakfast after a good night's sleep.
@stegwort23 @JJ41497212 @brithume Oh my God you're so not seeing it. What I said was the same as Stolen Generations in Australia? Really? So boarding schools is the same as the Stolen Generations? And politicians can enact policy - Opportunity Zones. You're so frustrating with your narrow views.
@FliasWho@brithume These charts absolutely show the results of past systemic racism. Do you see the very positive trends in many of these charts? Does that not show the progress that is happening? It takes generations for the effects of systemic racism to be snuffed out.
@FliasWho@brithume I replied to another post with this chart-I'll try to find it. Quite the opposite. I absolutely do not think African Americans are inferior - I actually had a black girlfriend which probably surprises you. I think it's absolutely tragic what they've had to endure since slavery.
@stegwort23@SharonLLaughli1 @zendog13 @idiot_jo@brithume No idea where you're seeing any "lies". Have you read any of my tweets? I'm absolutely consistent. We have racism in this country. We have racists in this country. However, systemic racism? I say to applaud progress because we have come a long way since slavery. Finished here.
@FliasWho@brithume You really are not thinking about the threads here. You are interpreting all this through your own lens and not seeing the big picture of what I'm - and others - are saying.
@coherj@brithume So you seem to be a good person that can weigh in on whether you feel in today's society, do we have systemic racism - not to be confused with stupid/ignorant racist people - or is there no change and systemic racism exists today as it always has? And where is it most pervasive?
