@SheffWedFC1867@AgainstLeague3 Lol that’s so reductionist. They’re just as expendable as players and coaches. People watch/play football for them, not for referees. They should be the focus
@SheffWedFC1867@AgainstLeague3 Ok, this conversation is going nowhere. If you’re happy with the standard of refereeing right now, then you’re right, they should hold complete totalitarian power over football matches. We shouldn’t ask for better refs even though the standard is in the ground currently
@SheffWedFC1867@AgainstLeague3 But what’s the solution? Have referees yield all power so they send off anyone who talks to them? Allow them to hide behind their cards after every wrong decision? The standard will drop further. You’d essentially never need a referee who knows anything about the sport like that
@SheffWedFC1867@AgainstLeague3 I think you’re misinterpreting the “why.” It shouldn’t be “why does no one want to be a ref?”, it should be “why are refs receiving abuse?” And the answer is because they hold complete power in a game to do as they please, and they take advantage of that. It shouldn’t be allowed
@SheffWedFC1867@AgainstLeague3 Let’s be real though, refs aren’t being called obscene names on the basis of a throw in being called in the wrong direction. They’re being called these things in the face of game-changing decisions, or an accumulation of them. Maybe that should be the catalyst for introspection?
@SheffWedFC1867@AgainstLeague3 Referees should be the most knowledgeable people on the pitch. If they can succinctly explain a decision when a player questions it, and convey to the player why the decision was correct, players won’t “yell in their face” for no reason.
@SheffWedFC1867@AgainstLeague3 That’s rare, it also doesn’t make the refs improve. Sending a player off for voicing their opinion without explaining the decision doesn’t help anyone either. In fact, it makes players hate refs, and in turn they never want to be them.
@SheffWedFC1867@AgainstLeague3 Refs are the only people involved in football who aren’t allowed to be criticized. Coincidentally, the standard for refs hasn’t improved as it has for players/coaches. They can take responsibility for their actions and use it to improve, rather than hiding behind their cards
@AgainstLeague3 There is a referee shortage because there are no model referees. Refs are absolved of sin across all age groups. When a ref makes a mistake in a game, he holds the power to simply send off anyone who questions him. How could young players look up to people like this?
