Six months later, Ibrahim's words still stand. On this International Day of Innocent Children Victims of Aggression, Sudan's children are still living this war. Child casualties rose 50% in Q1 2026. 4.2 million face acute malnutrition. 8 million are out of school.
DNHR calls for immediate action to protect Sudan's children and hold perpetrators accountable.

"The military is killing people in El Fasher."
These are the words of Ibrahim, a 4-year-old child from North Darfur now living in Tawila IDP camp.
Tomorrow, we mark Human Rights Day.
But what do human rights mean when children are the ones telling war stories?
What does protection mean when a child’s memory begins with violence?
Let this not be just another date on the calendar.
Let it be a reminder that children’s voices are evidence, and their survival is the true measure of human rights.
We share Ibrahim’s story for every child living this war.

On this International Day of Innocent Children Victims of Aggression, the Darfur Network for Human Rights draws attention to the catastrophic impact of Sudan's ongoing conflict on children.
Sudan is now the world's largest child displacement crisis. Child casualties rose by 50% in the first quarter of 2026, with drone strikes, shelling, and airstrikes among the leading causes of harm. Three out of every five displaced people in Sudan are children. An estimated 4.2 million children face acute malnutrition, including 825,000 in life-threatening severe acute cases, with famine conditions already breaking out in regions including North Darfur.
Both warring parties have increased the recruitment and use of child soldiers. Children continue to face sexual violence, abductions, and targeted attacks on civilian infrastructure including schools and maternal hospitals. Over 8 million children are out of school, with nearly half of all school buildings destroyed, closed, or occupied by armed factions.
DNHR calls for immediate action to protect Sudan's children and hold perpetrators accountable.

Three years of war. Three years of violence against women and girls. Three years of impunity.
Yesterday, at the 44th Session of the UN Working Group on Discrimination Against Women and Girls in New York, our advisor Quscondy Abdulshafi joined an extraordinary panel of human rights experts, lawyers, researchers, and survivors to speak truth about what is happening in Sudan and what accountability must look like.
The conversation covered:
🔴 The systematic use of rape as a weapon of war and tool of genocide
🛰️ How satellite imagery and OSINT are building the evidence base for accountability
⚖️ The legal avenues available, from the ICC to universal jurisdiction
💛 The resilience of Sudanese civil society and why local, community-led organizations must be resourced and heard
DNHR's documentation work was cited by the Yale Humanitarian Research Lab as a key source in their evidence gathering. A testament to what our teams on the ground produce every day, often with little to no funding.
As Quscondy reminded the room: this is not a lack of evidence. It is a lack of political will.

Children affected by war carry stories that words often cannot express. Through art, they can share their emotions, hopes, fears, and dreams.
#TraumaRescueAid and #HIND's Call, we came together to bring light to children affected by the wars in #Sudan and #Gaza through a drawing and creative expression activity.
Every drawing is a reminder that behind every crisis are children whose voices deserve to be heard and whose futures deserve to be protected.
Together, we stand with children affected by war and call for a world where every child can grow up in peace.

New Field Report: Renewed Clashes in Kubum, South Darfur
The Darfur Network for Human Rights has documented two consecutive days of armed violence between the Salamat and Beni Halba communities in Kubum, South Darfur State (30–31 May 2026).
Civilians have been displaced, villages burned, and the full humanitarian toll is still being verified. Local sources link the tensions to RSF mobilization and resource distribution practices that have deepened competition between the two communities.
DNHR calls for an immediate halt to hostilities, protection of civilians, and an independent investigation into the root causes of the violence.

#Renewed Clashes Between the Salamat and Beni Halba Tribes in South Darfur.
31 May 2026, Kubum ,South Darfur State, Sudan. The Darfur Network for Human Rights (DNHR) has documented the renewal of armed clashes between the Salamat and Beni Halba tribes in South Darfur State on 30 May 2026.
The violence continued for a second consecutive day, resulting in a number of casualties, including deaths and injuries, amid growing concerns about the escalation of violence and its impact on civilians and community stability in the region.
According to field sources and local testimonies, armed confrontations erupted between the two groups involving the use of weapons and military vehicles. The affected areas experienced heightened security tensions and instability. At the time of drafting this report, DNHR had not been able to obtain verified figures regarding the human and material losses resulting from the clashes.
Sources indicated that the current tensions are linked to disputes over mobilization and military recruitment efforts, as well as disagreements concerning the distribution of vehicles and motorcycles in areas under the influence of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
The Darfur Network for Human Rights has received reports from local sources alleging that individuals associated with the Rapid Support Forces have contributed to increasing tribal polarization and competition through mobilization policies and the distribution of military-related resources. According to these sources, such practices have intensified tensions among local communities.
DNHR emphasizes that these allegations require further independent verification and documentation. Nevertheless, they reflect growing concerns among local residents regarding the impact of the armed conflict on the social fabric and community cohesion across Darfur.
Impact on Civilians
Preliminary information indicates that the clashes have created fear and panic among civilians. There are increasing concerns about potential displacement if the violence continues or expands to other areas. These developments also pose a serious threat to social peace and coexistence among the region’s diverse communities.
The Darfur Network for Human Rights expresses its deep concern over the continuation of violence between tribal groups in South Darfur and warns of the humanitarian and security consequences associated with the escalation of the conflict.
DNHR calls upon:
Immediate cessation of hostilities and armed confrontations between the parties involved.
Protection of civilians and ensuring that they are not targeted or exposed to harm.
Conducting an independent and transparent investigation into the causes of the clashes and the parties responsible for inciting or supporting the violence.
Refraining from any practices that may fuel tribal divisions or contribute to the arming of local groups.
Supporting community reconciliation initiatives and strengthening social peace in South Darfur State.

North Darfur: Armed Group Abducts Civilian and Demands Ransom
29 May 2026
The Darfur Network for Human Rights (DNHR) strongly condemns the abduction of Mr. Muzamil Mohamed Ahmadai Mohamed (55), a civilian, on Friday 22 May 2026 in the Baraka Saira area, east of Saraf Omra, North Darfur.
According to reliable local sources documented by DNHR, an armed group travelling in a military Land Cruiser and wearing uniforms resembling those of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) seized Mr. Muzamil from his farm at approximately 3:00 p.m. and transferred him to an undisclosed location. The abductors have since demanded a ransom of 80 million Sudanese pounds for his release, providing no information on his whereabouts or condition.
Mr. Muzamil is a civilian with no political or military affiliation. He is married and the father of eight children. His abduction constitutes a grave violation of international human rights law and international humanitarian law.
DNHR calls for:
•The immediate and unconditional release of Mr. Muzamil Mohamed Ahmadai Mohamed
•Full disclosure of his whereabouts and guarantees for his physical and psychological safety
•An immediate end to all financial extortion connected to his abduction
•An independent and transparent investigation and accountability for those responsible
•Urgent measures to protect civilians from abduction, arbitrary detention, and related abuses across Darfur

#Sudan: The Committee for Justice (CFJ) has documented the continued detention of Sudanese lawyer Mohamed Ezzeldin since 10 May 2025 in the city of Port Sudan, following his arrest by forces affiliated with Military Intelligence, amid allegations of arbitrary detention, torture, and ill‑treatment.
According to CFJ’s documentation, Mohamed Ezzeldin was arrested without a lawful arrest warrant and has been held for prolonged periods without being brought before a competent judicial authority or granted a fair trial, with his detention repeatedly renewed.

🇸🇩 #Sudan: Footage shows the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) at the Faculty of Engineering Sciences at the University of Nyala, which has been taken over and is being used for military graduation and training ceremonies.
The video shows organized gatherings involving armed RSF militants within the university grounds.

🚨 The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have taken over the Faculty of Engineering Sciences at the University of Nyala using a civilian academic institution as a site for military graduation and training ceremonies.
The militarization of educational institutions is a clear violation of international humanitarian law. It endangers civilians, strips academic spaces of their protected status, and devastates the future of education in Sudan.
DNHR has verified this through detailed geospatial analysis, cross-referencing landmarks and buildings in RSF-affiliated footage with satellite imagery of the site. RSF personnel were identified through their uniforms, insignia, and accompanying published content.

⚠️ GRAPHIC WARNING
At least 20 civilians have been killed and approximately 25 others injured after a drone strike targeted a crowded market in Ghubaysh, West Kordofan.
The strike hit at around 11:00 a.m. local time on May 19th 2026, when the market was full of civilians. Among the dead and wounded are women, children, and elderly people.
The injured have been transferred to Ghubaysh Hospital for treatment.
This is yet another devastating attack on civilian life in Sudan. Markets are not military targets. The deliberate or indiscriminate targeting of civilians is a war crime.
DNHR calls for an immediate and independent investigation and demands accountability for those responsible.

The meeting was convened in light of the Special Rapporteur’s presence in Banjul to participate in the 87th Ordinary Session of the ACHPR, creating an important opportunity for direct engagement between the mandate and Sudanese civil society organizations working on minority rights, protection, accountability, and the broader human rights situation in Sudan.

DNHR strongly condemns the sentencing of Sudanese journalist Rishan Oshi to one year in prison and a fine of 10 million Sudanese pounds for a Facebook post alleging financial corruption by a military officer.
Criminalising speech through custodial sentences is a direct assault on press freedom. Defamation and libel must be treated as civil matters not tools of political silencing.
We stand with Sudanese journalists demanding the abolition of custodial sentences in press and publication cases.

"Sudanese Journalist Jailed for one Year"
The Informatics #Crime Court in Port Sudan issued a ruling yesterday sentencing #journalist Rishan Oshi to one year in #prison and imposing a fine of 10 million #Sudanese pounds over a post published on her personal #Facebook page.
The verdict followed her conviction on charges of defamation and libel stemming from allegations of financial #corruption she made against an officer stationed at a Sudanese embassy abroad.
The ruling has sparked widespread condemnation among Sudanese #journalists , who called for the abolition of custodial sentences in press and #publication cases. They argued that such cases should be treated as #civil matters, adjudicated through fines and damages rather than restrictions on freedom of expression.
