This account seeks to serve as a vehicle for truth-telling. We offer a loving critique of the MCPS system itself from those committed to healing and systemic repair of past and ongoing racial harm. We hope to inspire a move toward action and accountability.

Questions: Why have the principal and his supervisor(s) been able to evade responsibility in this case? Why does MCPS regularly reassign admin who engage in racist practices rather than train & supervise them? How did this man come to be a principal in the 1st place?

This year, I was given the opportunity to serve as the first ever student co-chair of the MoCo Student Wellbeing Action Group by @willjawando and @RicePolitics. Today our workgroup came out with 6 preliminary recommendations in a progress report, which are listed in this chain!

To be clear: Ki is an alum of MCPS. @MCAAPMD has caved in the face of white supremacy just as MCPS does (e.g. legal has advised against using the words WS in any definition of anti-racism). Apparently speaking truth to power is not acceptable even in "progressive" spaces.

Who is brave enough to ask them? The murder of George Floyd & traumatization of a black student at ESS cannot be seen as "one off" incidents. MCPS must prioritize truth-telling and repair of harm over white comfort. Anything less and the #mcpsantiracismaudit is meaningless.

In every school building, there are likely BIPOC staff with stories to tell about the racism they experience. Their insights could be utilized to make tangible changes to the ways schools operate, centering the needs and wants of the most vulnerable to racism & oppression.

MCPS is set to invest big $$ to train all staff in restorative practices this summer. Here's hoping this case can be used as a non-example during training as its handling has done little to repair that very real harm that the system perpetrates on Black students & families.
