⚠️ Kofi Annan Foundation warns of high risk of electoral violence in #USElections2024 and calls for responsible political leadership.
As Americans prepare to head to the polls, a new Electoral Vulnerability Index developed by the Kofi Annan Foundation with UpSight QRA, an independent forecasting company founded by researchers at @UU_Peace, shows a high risk of political violence.

This really was a fantastic evening and a huge privilege to hear from many who worked directly with #KofiAnnan - as always, a masterclass from @malloch_brown on multilateralism and the ebbs and flows of the #UnitedNations
📢 TODAY 📢
🤔 To what extent are new digital technologies changing the electoral landscape, and what are the implications for democracy? What are the threats of AI to democracy? Can it be regulated; if so, how?
These are just some of the questions being addressed in A Global Conversation on Elections: Elections and Democracy in the Digital Age.

Preparations for an election of sorts being set in motion in Myanmar. It cannot possibly meet the requirements for a free and fair poll, but Myanmar’s neighbors appear prepared to support it, believing that a flawed first step is better than none at all. https://t.co/5sTtrUiJQU
Last week, @ZANUPF_Official spokesperson Christopher Mutsvangwa admitted there was no reason to continue to detain @namataik_.
Today, 26 August 2024, despite evidence of her innocence, the courts continue to deny Namatai’s bail and have extended her detention until 5 September 2024.
We again call on Zimbabwean authorities to immediately release Namatai and her fellow human rights defenders and to drop all of the clearly spurious charges against them.
We are deeply concerned about reports that Kofi Annan NextGen Democracy Prize winner @namataik_ has been detained by security services in Harare. We call on the Zimbabwean authorities to confirm her whereabouts and explain what charges are being brought against her. Without charges, Namatai should be released immediately.
Thanks @ForumAthens for the feature and the interview by @nytimes and special thanks to the @KofiAnnanFdn. The continued conversation around human dignity and the insistence on the African being an equivalent is important for justice, equality and democracy! @weleadteam

It’s a great story (write the book please!) and definitely worth a watch on the @ForumAthens YouTube - best quote by far was the response given by assembly participants as to why they chose to take part-
“This is the way Ireland gets hard jobs done”
Brilliant.
#AthensForum day 2 kicks off with @ArtOLeary and the fantastic story of @CitizAssembly in Ireland and the incredible impact they have had even beyond the country -
“There is a hunger (worldwide) to have citizens involved in decision-making ”
At the opening ceremony for #AthensForum- great panel and fantastic to hear @JuttaUrpilainen cite the need to engage young people and the importance of the EU-funded #WYDE programme- find out more about our role here:

Great morning so far at @ForumAthens - Iain Walker was brilliant, lots of ideas from the panel on the building blocks of democracy - and now of course #TeensforDemocracy making it clear why they need to be at the table..
