Younger generation is slowly turning unhealthy

Young people in the age group of 20-50 years form a sizeable proportion of patients in my OPD now.

Most of them have one or more of the following abnormalities:
1. Overweight or obese
2. High HbA1C
3. Abnormal lipid profle
4. Low vitamin B12
5. Low vitamin D
6. High BP
7. High homocysteine level
8. Disc prolapse (causing neck or back pain)

Common risk factors and unhealthy habits found in them are:
1. Sedentary lifestyle
2. Sitting job of >10 hours per day
3. Lack of exercise
4. Eatig out often and consuming unhealthy foods
5. Inadequate sleep (<7 years)
6. Stress
7. Alcohol consumption
8. Smoking- active or passive

Recommendations for prevening diseases and remaining healthy

1. Sleep for 7 hours or more
2. Exercise for 30 minutes or more per day
3. Combine aerobic exercises and strength training
4. If your job involves prolonged sitting, take a few minutes walking break every 45 minutes
5. Reduce carb intake, increase protein intake
6. Avoid sugar, sweets & soft drinks
7. Avoid smoking
8. Avoid alcohol consumption
9. Reduce stress
10. Get preventive health check up done once a year
