🏛️ A historic moment for liver health.
Yesterday at the 79th World Health Assembly, Member States adopted the resolution "Steatotic liver disease: a missing piece in the global noncommunicable disease response" — the first time liver disease has ever been formally recognised within the global NCD agenda.
This is not a symbolic gesture. It is a mandate.
For too long, steatotic liver disease — affecting an estimated 1.5 billion people worldwide — has been absent from national health plans, NCD financing frameworks, and government accountability mechanisms. That changes now.
With this resolution, WHO Member States are called upon to: ✅ Integrate liver health into national NCD strategies ✅ Include liver health indicators in NCD monitoring frameworks ✅ Align health financing with integrated, prevention-centred care
As Professor Debbie Shawcross, EASL Secretary General, said at our WHA79 side event yesterday: "The NCD community has fought for decades to put prevention at the centre of health systems. Liver disease has been a missing piece. With this resolution, we have a mandate. Now we need governments to make it count."
The evidence is overwhelming. The EASL–Lancet Commission 2.0 estimates 780 preventable deaths per day and €55 billion in annual economic costs from liver disease in Europe alone.
The vote has been cast. Now the real work begins — and EASL will be there every step of the way.

@point_stevens@inselgruppe Congratulations if you could avoid it - if you take a look to this systematic review you can see that this incidence is not among the highest reported. And you can also see that treatment is not standardized at all and this is why more research is needed!
