I really miss how present we were in elementary school. No phones, no screens. Just us, happy, sitting at our desks, fully there, connecting with everything and everyone. I think that's why I like the idea of not using social media in the classroom.
As much as we hate on social media, it really keeps me up to date with what's going on with the rest of the world. Just from tweeting right now, I learned about the London Shooting since it's trending on the right of my screen. :(
Lesson 11 got me thinking about Disney Channel and how their new Disney Channel shows are so bad. Are all the new Disney Channels shows actually terrible? Or we are just attached to the OG ones we grew up with? #L11
Learned in another class that Facebook is going to introduce this thing where if I message you from Messenger, it'll go to whatever social media you selected as your preferred platform, so my Messenger message could go to your IG DMs if you wanted it to. Thoughts?
So true! I feel like we have such tight group because we've been chatting all semester and having good convos, but in real life, we have NOTHING. Just goes to show that social media relationships have really little value in the real world.
Speaking of a digital code, social media has created new types of bullies: cyber-bullies. Yet, some schools don't consider cyber-bullying to be as severe as physical bullying and therefore, don't punish as severely (or at all). Do you guys think one is worst than the other?
The required tweeting for this class kind of turned social media into a job for us. Do you think this is how influencers feel about social media? Always a thought in the back of their head that they should be tweeting/posting/uploading more than they are to hit a certain #? ๐
I think all the videos going around on YT where people do *24 HOURS WITHOUT SOCIAL MEDIA* just goes to show that social media is more of a toxicity in our life than anything else. We feel the need to cleanse ourselves from it, which I think shows how sucked in we've become. #L9
@LYafalian I feel like there must be WAY more fights/shading/hate than ever before. It's so easy to get upset at someone because of what social media is, like the way a text is sent or seeing your friend post about something you weren't invited to, etc. Was meant to connect us, but yet..
@AlexaEduc307 I find e-books so hard to read! I much rather read something that's been printed out, that I can annotate. It's like if my brain associates a screen with passivity/low brain effort and studying from screens just never goes well!
We have been progressing SO much in terms of changing things about society that weren't ok before. What caused this shift? What caused us to wake up & be like okay, this way of thinking needs to go? We could have easily become less accepting, but we didn't. Why? #L10
We've been seeing a lot of changes surrounding the concept of gender, as people are working towards slowly blurring the lines between the two. Do you think that some day gender will become something unimportant in society, like the colour of your hair or your height?
I don't think the shift towards a digital age should shift what communication skills kids should be learning. It's still important to know how to communicate politely, concisely, story tell, and make logical links between sentences/arguments. #Lesson12
I think social media is a great way to see who you really are. I really do believe that people who disrespect the digital code of conduct, would also disrespect the day-to-day code if they didn't have to suffer the repercussions of it. #Lesson13
I have barely written anything by hand other than exams this semester. Is this worrisome? Imagine for kids growing up with iPads? Can you image a world in a couple decades where knowing how to write isn't a necessity in first world countries?
@GalstianDavid Good point - Probably not! A huge appeal to these shows is being able to chat/rant about all the ridiculous things you see on it - which is why I think there are so many online fandoms for big shows like that.
A lot of people are talking about YouTube's utility for tutorials. Personally, YouTube is more of an inspiration tool for me. Getting to see where people travel, what people do, etc. motivates me to work hard and try new things and discover interests I didn't know I had.
