I felt the same. I came from a very ethnic Italian family and the look and culture that was always reflected in the books I read as a child were nothing like the kind of family I came from. It left me with a sense of disconnection.

Q5: I personally identify with this statement. Growing up I remember only seeing white children with blue eyes in books. I remember feeling like Asian people like me didn't "deserve" to be in books. It was something I sadly accepted at the time. #NJLibchat

I agree with this statement. Seeing themselves reflected in literature gives them a mirror to their identity and allows them to connect with others who are different them them. It allows self connection.
