Obstetrician and gynaecologist, clinical academic, special interest in heavy periods, benign gynaecology and breastfeeding. Busy mum. Views are my own.
Maternity care is affected everyday by midwife shortages and lack of funds caused by chronic poor decision making by the government eg brexit. Look at how often maternity units try to close/divert and you’ll see it’s not down to junior doctors strikes.
@BBC_HaveYourSay Junior doctors' strike: Some hospitals request staff return to work https://t.co/djjK5OE30L saying that emergency caesareans are affected is scaremongering. Consultants are perfectly capable of performing caesareans- it’s all those years as junior docs.

“While strikes may disrupt Emergency Care and pose a risk for patient safety, patient safety has long been at risk as a result of years of under-resourcing, under-funding, lack of staff, lack of beds, and inadequate and insufficient community and social care.”
Junior doctor strike: Union's pay demands 'unrealistic', says Steve Barclay - BBC News. I note MP pay up over 30% & >£20k since 2008. Reality: this is a political choice to not pay for doctors. @SteveBarclay blocking talks, not @TheBMA. https://t.co/bEqcxJFAMV
Our NHS junior doctors are the backbone of the medical workforce. We need them. You need them. We’ve cancelled all
clinics. 1/4 have suicidal thoughts. 1/5 depressed. 30% don’t make it to a senior position. Is the media disinterested, or have I missed something? This matters.
I’ve been a junior doctor for 18 years- not because I’m bad at my job but because I’ve gone over and above to make myself more valuable to the nhs. What is a professional with 18 years experience worth? What’s it worth for me to safely care for women in labour??
