"Let's be honest, nobody liked reading a manual back in the day."

I came across that comment a while ago and found it incredibly sad. Either the person didn't experience the 80s and 90s gaming era (meaning they don't know what they're talking about), or they genuinely didn't appreciate what came with the game - often far more than just the box and disks.

Some publishers were known for their dedication and attention to detail (MicroProse comes to mind with their massive manuals), while others added little extras: a map, a coin, a figurine, a poster, a spell book, a tech-tree overview, and so on. To me, the joy of reading and exploring all that was part of the experience.

Gobbling up the high-level spells from the Wizardry VII manual, marveling at the Ultima V map, remembering the Monkey Island Dial-A-Pirate code wheel, cutting out the keyboard overlay for Silent Service II…

So, let's be honest: some of us actually liked reading the manual and appreciating whatever else came in the game box, and the work that the people who made it put into it.

What you get today is a digital download - no box to open, no manual to touch, no poster to hang up, no map to study.

Released in North America in 2000, and still one of Capcom’s most underrated RPGs. The music, the art, the warmth mixed with darkness. It’s such a standout from the golden era of JRPGs.
