Our next #MembersMonday features Dr. Walter Bayne Geikie (1830-1917). Dr. Geikie was noted as the founder of Trinity Medical College in Toronto, was a member of the York Pioneers and was the original owner of the home now known as Hillary House (@Aurora_HS).

Samuel's grandson, Aemelius Jarvis, moved Hazelburn to Aurora in 1927 after marrying his second wife, May. He died in 1940. Here's Aemelius, May and friends at Hazelburn in the dining room and a shot of the cannibal cult from the movie in the same spot. Not sure which is creepier

Hazelburn was originally located at Jarvis and Shuter but was sold by Samuel Jarvis after he stole thousands of dollars from the Department of Indian Affairs (to which he was also connected to the horrendous displacement of Indigenous peoples) in order to pay back his debts

Inspired by the in-theatre antics of William Castle, just prior to a scary or gory scene, the viewers would be warned by the sound of a bell so they could shut their eyes.

Canadian director Ivan Reitman of Ghostbusters fame back in the early 1970s directed a horror movie starring Eugene Levy called CANNIBAL GIRLS - in the Hazelburn estate of the famous Jarvis family in #Aurora. May Jarvis makes a cameo as an innkeeper.
