Modern humans often think of themselves as the only humans to ever exist, but the story of our past is far more complex. Tens of thousands of years ago, Earth was home to several different human species living at the same time. We were not alone.

Among these ancient relatives were the Neanderthals of Europe and western Asia, the mysterious Denisovans of Asia, Homo floresiensis from Indonesia, Homo luzonensis from the Philippines, and populations of Homo erectus that survived in parts of Asia. Alongside them lived our own species, Homo sapiens, which first evolved in Africa more than 300,000 years ago before spreading across the globe.

These human species were not primitive cave dwellers in the way they are often portrayed. Many made tools, controlled fire, hunted large animals, and adapted to challenging environments. Evidence even shows that Homo sapiens interbred with Neanderthals and Denisovans. In fact, many people today still carry traces of Neanderthal or Denisovan DNA within their genomes.

Over time, however, the other human species disappeared. Scientists continue to debate exactly why. Climate change, competition for resources, disease, smaller populations, and assimilation into larger Homo sapiens groups may all have played a role. By around 40,000 years ago, most of these human relatives had vanished, leaving our species as the last surviving member of a once diverse human family tree.

Strange Fact: Most people of non African ancestry still carry between 1% and 2% Neanderthal DNA, making these ancient humans a living part of us today.
