Deaf Dogs make a difference in the hospital. George Wilson the palliative care dog visits patients with cancer, spending time with families to cheer them up.
George Wilson has become a cancer advocate for Australia.
Deaf dogs are making a difference in peopleโs life.
Luna is 12 months old and was surrendered with behavioural problems. After one week in care and positive reward training. Luna can now sit, spin, shake, drop, and maintain eye contact.
Why Deaf dogs make great family members
Deaf dogs love their owners and love staying by their side. You may feel like you are being stalked! NO, they love and learn so much from your facial expressions.
Deaf dogs do not react to other dogs barking in your street.
Training a deaf dog we rely on eye contact. The first step to training is teach your dog to look you in the eyes. Thumbs up and a yummy high value treat. Did you know that deaf dogs can read your facial expressions?
Impulse training
Luna came into rescue only a few days ago with no prior training. Five times a day she is having small training sessions. Sit, wait and impulse control. Our dogs can only be adopted once they are trained. As a new parent we want you to continue the training.
Myth buster: I do not know sign language so I can not train my deaf dogs.
Hand signals are the key to training a deaf dog. Keep hand signal consistent. There is no right or wrong use what you and your dog understand. Your dog wants to know what you would like him to do-
Training your dog with a trainer is not a once off! Dogs need mind stimulation and daily walks. Often people attend a six week training group and never return as they feel the dog is trained. 6 months later the dog is surrendered with the behaviour problems. Keep training
