Another crisis of it's own making? #Football Australia has controversially decided to cap the 75'ers team as the First #Matildas on April 4, despite it's own independent review into selection criteria not yet being finalised. 17 former Matildas captains and more than 100 others say they have been 'bruised' by the FA's decision.
Statement from FA
“Football Australia has made a clear and definitive decision to recognise the 1975 team as the first official Australian women’s national football team – the original Matildas – following an independent review of NT Recognition Criteria that assessed a range of historical and football-specific criteria.
This decision was taken in line with Football Australia’s governance processes and is not subject to any further review.
While the Women’s Football Council has chosen to conduct its own historical review, Football Australia has not commissioned, funded, nor will its outcomes have any bearing on the Board’s decision.
We respect the Council’s autonomy and interest in the history of the women’s game, but Football Australia is resolute in its position. The recognition of the 1975 team is long overdue, and we look forward to honouring them publicly at an upcoming Matildas match — a proud and rightful moment for the pioneers of Australian football.”
@savesydneykoala@ChrisMinnsMP@tanya_plibersek Not sure why police were called to move this koala on? Why not Parks and Wildlife? Also unsure why the news coverage that I saw portrayed the situation as somewhat humorous? Clear to those who think about it that koala habitat is being decimated. @ChrisMinnsMP@tanya_plibersek
one of the odd parts of this story is how Pat O'Connor seemed to backflip on her view of the team over the years. here's a clipping from the 1979 AWSA report, where she acknowledges they were a club team in Hong Kong (last par). what changed, when, and why?
bizarrely, FA have removed from their media release two of the four overseas “experts” that supposedly helped with this review. Alex Phillips and Richard Scott are both gone 🤔

Outrageous news today.
A safe, livable planet under 1.5C demands no new coal, oil or gas mines - not one! - but Victorian Labor will extract gas from underneath our iconic Twelve Apostles from the end of this month.

❤️SHE MATTERS: JENNIFER & GRETL PETELCZYC!❤️
For as long as men have been committing violence against women, women have been offering shelter, safety and support for women escaping that violence.
And now we can't even support our mates, without being killed.
Jennifer Petelczyc was helping to keep one of her friends safe from a violent thug when that thug chose to kill Jennifer and her daughter Gretl.
Jennifer & Gretl Petelczyc are the two women who were killed yesterday in Floreat, Western Australia. The man who ended their lives took the coward's way out and killed himself.
Jennifer and Gretl are the 37th & 38th Australian women killed in 2024.
This brutal thug was hunting down his former partner who was Jennifer's friend. Media have reported the intended victim called Jennifer earlier in the day, warning her to hide because her ex was out for blood.
He turned up at Jennifer's door and shot her and her daughter. As police arrived on scene, he killed himself. He was known to police and a licensed gun owner.
Today, Australia is picking up the pieces yet again as the epidemic of femicides sweeps our country.
Jennifer was a 59-year-old mum. Gretl was just 18 years old, a gifted waterpolo player and a student at the University of Western Australia.
Jennifer was widowed in 2019 and she lived for her both daughters.
Clearly (and I really hate that I have to say this) neither of these women were complicit in their own deaths - helping a mate in crisis is what we Aussies do.
This was all Jennifer was doing for her friend.
And yet there are those on social media already laying the seeds of blame firmly at the feet of Jennifer and if not Jennifer, then the man's intended victim.
They say his former partner provoked him because she wanted a property settlement in the wake of divorce.
Blaming the victims is a story as old as time itself, though ... and one that never changes.
RIP JENNIFER & GRETL PETELCZYC! ❤️

I document ALL unlawful deaths of women and children, regardless of perpetrator gender or relationship between the person killed and the accused. This means not every death is due to domestic and family violence. Australians are also killed by strangers, friends, colleagues, neighbours and other people known to them.

❤️SHE MATTERS: EMMA BATES!❤️
Emma Bates. This is her name - and a little story about her life. But first, I must start with her death. Emma was killed in Cobram, Victoria, on Tuesday. Her neighbor - a man known to the justice system for his ongoing use of violence - has been charged with a raft of offences against Emma including assault. He has not been charged with murder. It's not clear if the charges will be upgraded.
At the age of 49, Emma this week became the 31st Australian woman killed in 2024 and the 11th lost to violence in April.
Emma had only known her alleged killer a very short time. Rumour-mongers say they were lovers but her family disputes this fervently, saying she did not like him.
Emma was known in her community for her kindness.
She had some serious health challenges including diabetes and needed mobility aids to navigate the world.
Regardless, she always found time to make life better for others. Often bringing food to people in need, and giving gifts to those worse off than herself.
She rescued - and adored - cats and was a much-loved aunt to 17 nieces and nephews.
'They (her nephews and nieces) were her pride and joy and she would spend hours talking about them to everyone," Emma's sister told a media outlet.
"She had many of their faces tattooed to her leg so she could carry them with her always."
Emma was an awesome human, she mattered to her family, she mattered to her community, she matters to me. I hope she matters to you.
RIP EMMA BATES! ❤️

@ShereleMoody Just a thought. Do you think wearing black armbands (or similar) every time a woman is killed through domestic violence would help in focusing attention on these crimes?
