“After years spent analyzing football matches and commentating on the game at the highest level, I can honestly say that what we witnessed today between Argentina and Egypt was unlike anything I’ve seen in my entire career.

How that was awarded as a penalty remains a complete mystery. The contact, if any, looked minimal at best, yet the decision stood. It’s becoming harder and harder to watch the sport without feeling that the beautiful game is slowly turning into something of a joke for millions of fans around the world. The officiating has been strangely “clean” almost suspiciously so yet it leaves serious questions about consistency and impartiality.

Then there was Egypt’s goal, ruled out for reasons that still aren’t entirely clear. Why was it disallowed? In the same match, when Argentina scored their decisive goal, there appeared to be a clear foul in the build-up that neither the referee nor VAR chose to review properly. These are the moments that make supporters feel the outcome is no longer decided purely on the pitch.

There’s a growing narrative out there and it’s hard to ignore that Lionel Messi is being protected as FIFA’s golden boy. With Cristiano Ronaldo no longer part of the international scene, some believe the powers that be are determined to keep Messi’s story alive for as long as possible because his presence still drives massive global interest and viewing figures. Whether that’s true or not, the pattern of decisions in key moments only fuels that conversation.

He explained that investigative journalism is about uncovering hidden truths with evidence beyond a reasonable doubt, not rumours or speculation.
Gagare showed how investigative reporting has historically exposed corruption and forced accountability. He encouraged journalists to have credible sources. It is crucial for journalists to verify facts through multiple sourcing to ensure accuracy and fairness, especially when dealing with sensitive stories.
Gagare also noted the risks: many sources fear talking, making it vital to protect them and maintain ethical standards.
Ultimately, he reminded the school of Integrity fellows that the role of investigative journalists is rooted in public interest to expose wrongdoing, promote transparency, and strengthen democracy.

This is a shocking table. It is unacceptable that our Nation, with its high literacy rates, hard working people, abundant mineral resources, rich agricultural lands and magnificent tourist attractions, should have so many who wallow in extreme poverty.

It is made even worse by the growing gap between the extreme poor and the obscenely rich ruling elite who drive in brand new Rolls Royce motor vehicles , live in mansions, have their own helicopters and planes and swan around the world. The same elite have few discernible businesses, employ relatively few people and make it a practice to flaunt their wealth.

This is unacceptable and must change if we are to restore pride to our beloved #Zimbabwe.

Corruption and Human Rights: Insights from @zhrc365 presentation by Thomas Kanyimo, Acting Director, Complaints Handling and Investigations and Administrative Justice

As Zimbabwe pursues its Vision 2030 goals, the link between human rights, administrative justice, and corruption cannot be ignored. The Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission (ZHRC), in its dual role as a National Human Rights Institution and administrative justice body, sits at the heart of this intersection.
Corruption directly undermines human rights and administrative justice by:
Distorting resource allocation, prioritising personal gains over national interests.

Eroding public trust in institutions.

Compromising justice through bribery and favouritism.

Violating civil, political, economic, social, and cultural rights.

Disproportionately affecting vulnerable groups, including women, children, youth, pensioners, and the elderly.

Enabling looting of natural resources and environmental degradation.

Weakening civil society voices advocating for rights and justice.

Hindering sustainable development and access to essential services.

Perpetuating ineffective governance and poor public service delivery.

Damaging international relations, investment, and aid prospects.

The ZHRC, established under sections 232(b) and 242 of the Constitution, receives complaints and ensures redress, safeguarding citizens’ rights and promoting administrative justice. Addressing corruption is essential not only for governance but also for the protection of human rights and the equitable development of Zimbabwe.

At the ongoing School of Integrity 2025, @DakarayiM , Senior Researcher at Transparency International Zimbabwe (TI Z), led a session on understanding and measuring corruption.

He outlined three forms of corruption petty, grand, and political, showing how each undermines governance and widens inequality.
Matanga stressed that unchecked corruption fuels conflict, weakens trust, and stalls national progress.

He highlighted the role of data and tools like the Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) in guiding evidence-based advocacy and reforms, reminding participants that the fight against corruption is about facts, accountability, and moral leadership.

The School of Integrity is empowering young Zimbabwean leaders to uphold integrity, accountability and transparency in all areas of public life.
